While our initial impressions of Burnout CRASH! delighted us by showing that the title was focusing on the marquee wrecks of the series, albeit with a top-down view, first footage of the game reveals a unique control scheme as well. Utilizing Kinect, players who choose to do so, can hold their hands in the traditional “ten and two” position in order to pilot their vehicle.

But the motion control integration doesn’t end there, as Burnout CRASH! will also require players jump up and down in order to prolong their destruction. With that mechanic the game takes on an almost pinball-like identity, as the player’s car bounces from item to item earning cash along the way. It might be a bit too gimmicky for some Burnout fans’ taste, but it does get the player involved in the action.

If there was any inkling, after first screenshots were released, that Burnout CRASH! was going to be a stark departure for the series, those thoughts are confirmed by this gameplay footage. Sure, there are signature elements of the series — challenges and rewards for bigger crashes — at play, but for the most part this seems to be an entirely new type of game.

Don’t misunderstand, the game looks like a ton of fun, especially for an XBLA or PSN title, it just might not be what we expected after Burnout: Paradise. Take a look at Burnout CRASH!:

At $7.99, the game should be a must-buy for any fan of the Burnout series, and — with some Kinect support included — it could even introduce more gamers to the developer Criterion's work on the series.

Kinect does seem a little bit superfluous, and could get in the way of the actual game experience with the jumping up and down, but support for classic controls keeps the game approachable by every type of gamer. We can’t wait to see more of this game in action.

What do you think of Burnout CRASH!? Do you plan on getting in on the car-wrecking action using Kinect or with traditional controls?

Burnout CRASH! releases this fall for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
