There have been some rumors swirling about that Destiny 2 developer Bungie is working on a new IP. The new game, rumored to be titled Matter, sounds like a departure for the studio and unlike anything it's done.

Bungie is eschewing its previous trend of being a one game, and mostly one franchise at a time, developer sometime before the year 2025. This will big departure from how Bungie operated when it was owned by Microsoft and Activision. Bungie has been operated independently for a year now. Now, keeping in line with the rumors leaked out thus far, the new game sounds like it will be completely different from Destiny in a key way. The game will be funny.

This information comes from a job listing for an ""Incubation Art Director" for a new IP at Bungie. One huge sign indicates this is project likely a complete departure from older titles is the way the posting describes the tone and style of the game. The description reads, "Are you on a mission to create games that bond players together into deeply invested communities? Would you like to work on something comedic with lighthearted and whimsical characters?"

This job posting also acts as the most official confirmation thats's been given regarding Matter's existence. Later in the listing it confirms that this position is indeed for a new project saying "As the Incubation Art Director, you will define the look of a new Bungie IP and work on all aspects of art to guide a prototype on the path to production."

In addition to the Activision departure, Bungie made other big moves in the last couple years that indicated something new may be in the works. In 2018, Bungie got a $100 million investment from Net Ease to work on a non-Destiny new IP. Now, it appears as if that game has begun early stages of development.

Another IP from Bungie would be a rarity, but it is getting about time to expect something new from the studio. Bungie has been working on Destiny for over a decade now, since before Halo: Reach launched. Before that, they spent over a decade on the Halo franchise. The plans for Destiny 3 are currently unknown, but it is looking like its life cycle is going to extend beyond the three years the first Destiny stuck around for.

Matter is rumored to be in development.
