Bungie Co-Founder Would Be Surprised If Microsoft Botched 'Halo 4'

Halo 4 Interview Seropian Bungie GameSpot

While the announcement of Halo 4 at last year's E3 came as no surprise, the absence of Bungie's involvement in the project definitely turned some heads. Recently, Bungie's Co-Founder Alex Seropian spoke his peace about the upcoming Halo 4 and it seems he's on the fence.

Not giving completely positive or negative opinons, Seropian simply hopes for the best now that the company's baby is in someone else's hands -- namely Microsoft and 343 Industries.

In an interview with GameSpot, Seropian discloses his ambivalent feelings with the sequel.

I don't think I can be anything other than hopeful that it will be great. We'll see. Halo is one of the crown jewels in the Microsoft gaming IP, if not the crown jewel, so you would expect nothing less than for them to take the time needed and apply the resources needed to make it great. I would be pretty surprised if they wiffed it. Maybe it will bring a fresh perspective, and that's so hard because there's so many fans that are used to a particular thing that bringing something new is's hard to bring something new to a franchise that's so established. I'm looking forward to it.

Regardless of his attempt to be slightly optimistic, he added that he was still "a little bit" nervous about the whole thing and it's hard to blame him.

He should take solace, however, in the simplicity of the Halo formula and its already established popularity, making it fairly easy to emulate -- but this brings up a good question, as to whether gamers want something new or will be content with the same elements that have been recycled thrice over? While there are signs that updates are indeed coming to the story of Halo, it was also reported that Master Chief and the universe itself will experience significant changes since the last installment, advances on how the game will play are still unclear.

Since the story is essentially the easy part, gameplay is where the focus should lie - not only because Halo is a tad dated (especially compared to current-gen shooters), but that Halo inherently has a legacy to live up to and a horde of eager fans that will except nothing less than excellence. The pressure is high and Seropian knows it.
