Former Halo developer Bungie has finally revealed a release date for their highly anticipated next effort, Destiny, a FPS with plenty of MMO trappings. The game will be available for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on September 9, 2014.
Bungie confirmed the news in a lengthy blog post on their site wherein Community Manager Deej explained the company’s goals with Destiny, and how they have achieved them. But, more importantly, the post concluded with the all-important launch date.
While many high profile 2014 releases (Watch_Dogs, Titanfall) have locked down the spring months in 2014, Destiny is now one of the first to nab a spot in the highly coveted fall season. Granted, September is a little early, but that’s likely because the game’s publisher, Activision, wanted to ensure there was enough space between Destiny and next year’s Call of Duty so as to not over saturate the market with shooters.
December is set to be a big month for Destiny, beyond this release date reveal. The highly anticipated shooter is Game Informer‘s cover story — meaning plenty more in depth details are right around the corner — and Bungie reportedly has something exciting to show at tonight’s VGX ceremony. With a game this big, Bungie could reveal one new thing per month and that might still not even scratch the surface.
Thus far, we have learned smaller details about each of Destiny‘s various elements, from the game’s three classes to its dynamic multiplayer, but there is still plenty more to cover in the future. PvP is something that Bungie has shied away from explaining in any appreciable detail, so we wouldn’t be surprised if GI had a closer look at that portion of the game.
Nevertheless, one of the most important details is now out of the way — we have a release date. But, it’s important to mention that gamers can get in on the Destiny action even earlier, when the game goes into beta testing in the summer of 2014. Bungie has not revealed any dates for the beta test aside from this new “Summer” window, but we know pre-order holders on PlayStation platforms will get access first.
