As Bungie's first-person looter shooter Destiny 2 approaches the end of Season of the Worthy and prepares to make changes like sunsetting weapons for the next season, players are waiting to find out more about what that season will entail. The "This Week At Bungie" post uploaded today promises that even though the developers can't put an exact date on when the conversation about what's next will begin, it will be happening "very soon."
The post opens with a teaser telling players to keep their "eyes up" as the sun is being eclipsed by the Cabal's superweapon the Almighty, a "stark reminder that a great threat approaches" and spells "certain doom." However, it goes on to talk about how the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has left Bungie employees working from home, which has affected development of the game as well as the studio's usual pattern of announcing news and milestones at live events.
That said, it does reassure fans that development is and will continue, and that there is "exciting news to share about our plans" which will be disseminated over the Internet rather than at a convention or other event. It points fans to Bungie's official Twitter account to find updates about when Destiny 2-related announcements will be streamed, and says the reveal of the next season will come alongside updates about the next chapter of its story.
Though Destiny 2 is almost three years old, there's no sign of it slowing down, especially with Bungie continuing to let fans know that development is ongoing despite worldwide circumstances. The studio confirmed that Destiny 2 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X earlier this month, which suggests there are still lots of ideas to incorporate for the foreseeable future.
While the "This Week At Bungie" post is somewhat vague about what players can expect to see in the upcoming season of content, the crux of what it will entail from a narrative standing seems obvious enough. Stopping the Almighty from destroying everything may be a daunting task as indicated by minor in-game changes like creepy music playing in the Tower.
This uncertain, ever-evolving story is part of what has garnered Bungie a huge fanbase for its follow-up to the acclaimed Halo franchise. However, some of those fans are wary of the prospect that next season will change the game's weapon pool, as many become attached to weapons like Jotunn for their utility and designs.
