Originally introduced inside of the Forsaken expansion, Gambit was positioned as a fresh game mode for Destiny 2 that mixed the player versus enemy side of the game, with elements of player versus player. Two teams attempted to bank objects called motes, collected from defeated enemies and reaching a goal to summon a boss fight before the opposing side could. Invaders could jump to the other team's side to try and slow their progress down.

While the mode was initially very popular, it has since fallen on hard times largely due to the fact that the mode has gone relatively unchanged in terms of new maps or content. While Bungie has made a number of tweaks, including combining two variant forms of the mode into one, most players view the experience as something they have to do, rather than want to do. In fact, numerous threads have appeared online with suggestions on how to fix or improve Gambit in the future. As it turns out, Bungie has been listening and offers a bit of hope for those who want to see the Drifter's mode return to prominence.

One Destiny 2 player, worried for the mode's future, started a new thread on the game's subReddit to ask Bungie not to remove Gambit entirely. Instead, RunelordTressa called for tweaks and potentially even bringing back some of the Gambit Prime mechanics that were removed when the game modes were combined. Ultimately, the player didn't want the game to remove another avenue for finding loot like the Bottom Dollar hand cannon.

With all the Gambit threads popping up, Destiny 2 community manager Dylan 'dmg04' Gafner popped into the thread to reassure fans like RunelordTressa that Bungie has no plans to remove the mode. In fact, Gafner went on to confirm that the studio has a number of deeper improvements coming beyond season 15 including reputation tweaks. The studio has been taking feedback on Gambit for a while and that improvements would have come sooner, but the studio wanted to ensure a balanced workload for the team.

Workload balance can be a tough thing to achieve for studios working on live service games like Destiny 2. Between constant updates, seasonal content, as well as expansions, Bungie typically has a lot going on. In addition to the Witch Queen expansion, Bungie is in the middle of Season of the Splicer, which so far has proven to be very story heavy teasing some potentially big events that could come to pass. Next week, the game also sees a big loot refresh bringing back weapons from the Moon and Dreaming City with fresh perks.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
