Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream event, where the company first unveiled its upcoming PlayStation 5 console, also revealed new titles like Horizon: Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and a remake of FromSoftware's Demon's Souls. Even against all of these major titles, Young Horses' Bugsnax stood out for its bizarre premise and inspirations, including Bioshock according to Creative Director Kevin Zuhn. Yet, it turns out gamers had a six-year head start on knowing what Bugsnax was all about if they followed the right people on social media.

Young Horses' President Philip Tibitoski retweeted a social media post from October 2014 today that simply said, "Bugsnax," laughing about how nobody picked up on the game then. Despite the fact that the studio, whose previous acclaim comes from the slapstick Octodad series, only unveiled Bugsnax this month, this reveal makes it clear the game has been in development since Octodad: Dadliest Catch released in early 2014.

However, this was not the only hint about Bugsnax released by Tibitoski. A Twitter user who goes by mistaketheory apparently began to go through Tibitoski's old posts after hearing about the Bugsnax reveal and found the "elevator pitch" for the game from a few days prior describing it as a combination of Pokemon Snap, Animal Crossing, and horrible body dysmorphia where "the bugsnax actually are excited for you to eat them."

Tibitoski discussed more about the pitch behind the game that suggests additional mechanics may be implemented, as eating bugsnax and changing one's traits was proposed as a way to "become friends [and] date others." Some fans have gotten the impression that Bugsnax may be a horror game, but if the dating sim idea from this tweet carried into development that could mean something entirely different.

As a launch title for the PS5, Bugsnax' developers have talked about how much the new console's tech will make a difference in the game. For instance, Tibitowski said unique features in the PS5 DualSense controller like haptic feedback will be "essential" to design.

Following his tweet about the 2014 game title reveal, Tibitoski put out another message saying, "I guess I can't haphazardly tweet out our internal game pitches 6 years ahead of time anymore," likely because now his messages will be scrutinized for similar actions. While this is fair, it's hard to believe anyone could have guessed Bugsnax would be a reality in 2014, especially with influences like cult classic Dark Cloud.

Bugsnax is set to come to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Epic Games Store in holiday 2020.
