When the PlayStation 5 was released last November, one of the surprise hits for the system was console exclusive Bugsnax. The game was available through PS Plus on day one, so it was very much primed for success, with its adorable aesthetic doing the rest of the work. The success of Bugsnax was a big talking point upon the release of the PlayStation 5, though talk has since died down with many PlayStation gamers moving onto other titles.

However, Bugsnax looks set to be involved in gaming discussions once again going forward, as its first DLC has just been announced. Bugsnax has needed something to get players to return to the game upon completing its main story, and upcoming DLC The Isle of Bigsnax may be the perfect thing. In particular, The Isle of Bigsnax’s customization options could be set to take the game to another level.

Bugsnax’s Success on the PlayStation 5

Bugsnax is yet another cutesy video game that gamers can’t seem to get enough of. A bit of a trend has begun to emerge in recent years, with games of this style taking the world by storm, and examples include Slime Rancher and Animal Crossing New Horizons. While the success of Slime Rancher suggests the trend has existed for quite some time, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Bugsnax thrived in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, pointing to a need for light-hearted distractions. Bugsnax was released in November 2020 as a day one release for the PS5, free to PS Plus subscribers. This will have no doubt aided in Bugsnax's initial success, but gamers were enthused by the bug collecting game.

The game’s success is such that a new free DLC, The Isle of Bigsnax, has recently been revealed for Bugsnax with a release date of early 2022. This DLC will hopefully bring players back to Bugsnax following its ending by giving them all new content to experience for the first time. Included within The Isle of Bigsnax is of course an all-new island where Bugsnax are able to grow to an enormous stature. Players will also receive a new tool in the Shrink Spice, which will reduce these giant Bugsnax down to regular size, making them catchable. Perhaps most excitingly for Bugsnax players is the all-new customization options, as they could change the way gamers play Bugsnax.

Bugsnax: The Isle of Bigsnax Customization

In The Isle of Bigsnax, players will be given their own fully-customizable hut where they can receive challenges and decorate to their heart’s desire. This should offer plenty of reason for Bugsnax players to jump back into the game next year, but that isn’t all. Bughats are also coming to Bugsnax, which can be given to captured Bugsnax to allow for that little extra customization and bit of adorableness. Gamers will have plenty to do when they jump back into Bugsnax to experience The Isle of Bigsnax for the first time, but the customization options may take up the majority of their time.

The base game of Bugsnax is fun already, but without the customization options provided by The Isle of Bigsnax, something felt missing. In the base game, players are just visiting the island of Bugsnax, and it shows in the way players experience the game. Bugsnax seems like the perfect type of game for an Animal Crossing-style base building experience, and that is hopefully exactly what players will get in The Isle of Bigsnax. In addition, the Bughats should make the act of capturing Bugsnax that little bit more rewarding, with the ability to customize them and make them the player’s own. The Isle of Bigsnax’s customization options look set to bring a marked improvement upon the base game of Bugsnax, which could see players returning for their Bugsnax fix.

Bugsnax is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
