Before the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests began, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was already teasing plans for its eighth season. For example, the NBC series' showrunner Dan Goor previously hinted that Season 8's storyline might touch on the ongoing quarantine. However, series star Terry Crews recently announced that the show is scrapping any existing plans for the next season.

In an interview with Access Daily, Crews explained that Brooklyn Nine-Nine's writers' room had made this decision in response to George Floyd's murder and widespread activism from the Black Lives Matter movement. After many "deep conversations" about the inequality that black people in America face, Crews said the writers wanted to use this opportunity to make "something that will truly be groundbreaking."

Before this decision, the series had four scripts ready for production and its writers are not sure "which directions" the new season will take. But according to Access Daily, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's goal is to "amplify themes" and ideas behind the BLM protests.

This approach is in line with Brooklyn Nine-Nine's ability to discuss race and sexuality without losing its humorous, comedic voice. Although series star Stephanie Beatriz previously said filming for Season 8 would start in August, avid fans of the show may be in for a longer wait than anticipated.
