Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Chelsea Peretti talked about what direction the show should take for its 8th season. Best known for playing sardonic assistant Gina Linetti, Peretti  thinks that the show could send a radical message.

Speaking over Instagram live with executive editor Eric Kohn, Peretti talked about the show following the killing of George Floyd saying “my thought was like ‘They should just defund the police!’ And have everyone going to do community-oriented work. That’s probably not what they’re going to do. But I’m looking forward to seeing what they do because I know they have to respond to this, the unfortunate reality that policing has been and is.”

Cancelled by Fox in 2018, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was swiftly picked up by NBC where it's run for two seasons with another on the way. In June, regular cast member Terry Crews revealed that 4 scripted episodes had been dropped while showrunners considered what direction to take in the wake of the George Floyd killing and Black Lives Matter protests. Another possible direction for the show would be to comment on the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Though Peretti left Brooklyn Nine-Nine as a regular cast member in its fifth season, she's been back after appearing in the sixth season episode 'Return of the King'. Since leaving the show Chelsea has released two music EPs themed around coffee, Foam and Flotsam and Phosphorescent Panic, voiced Monica's mother in Netflix's Big Mouth and starred as the lead in anti-romantic comedy Spinster. During the interview Peretti also revealed that she's working on her first feature script and her next role will be in the upcoming Sing 2, the sequel to the 2016 film which starred Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson.
