‘Broken Age’ Gets New Sales Model, Trailer

By | 3 years ago

It may be the Kickstarter project that changed video game development forever, but Double Fine‘s adventure game Broken Age isn’t going to be attempting a similar experiment when it comes to release. For those who missed the crowd-funding train and seek to play the game for a price, there’s no choice but to wait until January 28.

The second half of the tale is without a release date, but is bundled with its predecessor. To make sure that potential players are intrigued by both halves of this broken tale, the developers have released a new trailer setting the stage for Vella, and her own unique brand of adventure.

While Kickstarter backers have access to Broken Age Part One already, exactly how the studio was going to go about a general release was a source of some controversy of late. It had previously been reported that Double Fine would be selling Early Access to the game, selling it in an unfinished state to help raise the funds needed to get it to the finish line.

But according to a Kickstarter update, the developers seem to have underestimated their polishing abilities, explaining that they plan on going a different route:

“You may recall that at one point Broken Age was planned for release under the Steam Early Access program… This is no longer the case. For various logistical reasons, and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a ‘Season Pass’ granting access to Act 2 once it is complete.”

Obviously we can only hope that Double Fine’s reasons for considering an Early Access program were in the interest of playing it safe, since there is no worse time for a game to run into serious issues after being sold – Early Access or no. With a wealth of reviews sure to surface before the game is released to the gaming public, skeptics should have plenty of opportunities to hear if Elijah Wood and the rest of the voice cast live up to hopes.

Have you gotten the chance to dip your feet into the game so far, Kickstarter backers? Do you have concerns about the shift in delivery method, or do you remain optimistic? Sound off in the comments.

Broken Age Act One is available for Kickstarter backers now, and will be available to the general public on January 28, 2014. A purchase unlocks Act Two automatically once released.
