Xbox Game Pass is filled with great titles that subscribers can play for free. There are over 100 games available through Game Pass, so gamers really can’t get enough of the games on offer. There’s a little something for everyone, which has led to the service becoming one of the most popular in gaming. Two of the more highly thought of games available through Game Pass are Subnautica and Prey, but one other title available through Game Pass may appeal even more to gamers on the fence.

Breathedge is possibly the perfect combination of what makes Prey and Subnautica great, all in one adventure survival package. Breathedge was released in September 2018, but this year has received quite a lot of attention due to its inclusion on Game Pass. While both Prey and Subnautica are already available on Game Pass, Breathedge may be the perfect game for fans to check out once they’ve played both, or it could just be a great game for fans of survival in space.

What is Breathedge?

Players should save often in breathedge

Breathedge is an adventure survival game with a major twist. Set in outer-space, Breathedge tasks the player with surviving the unforgiving environment and finding out the truth behind their spaceship crash. This may sound like a standard plot for a survival game, but Breathedge is anything but standard. The game has a lot of humor to it, and it consistently mocks itself along with other games in the survival space. Fans of a more grave and weighty survival experience should look elsewhere, as Breathedge seeks to make the player laugh. Even from an outside perspective, it's clear that Breathedge doesn’t offer the typical adventure survival experience, but something quite different.

For starters, players are joined by an immortal chicken in Breathedge who can sometimes help to take the edge off of the occasional heavy atmosphere of the game. The chicken can be of use at times, as it serves as a way to plug holes in the spaceship and stop electrical sparks, which will reward the player with Breathedge’s Chicken Dielectric achievement. The chicken is, unfortunately, the only companion players can have, as Breathedge is purely a single-player game. While Breathedge is seemingly a good fit for a multiplayer survival setup, there is currently no option to play with a friend, immortal chickens aside. This may be disappointing to some, but Breathedge players can still enjoy the game’s humorous story solo.

A Combination of Prey and Subnautica?

Prey 2017

Aesthetically, while Breathedge is set in outer space, it does appear very similar to the likes of Subnautica. The game’s foreboding space setting can occasionally summon similar feelings to those produced by Subnautica’s often terrifying deep-sea setting. Subnautica is renowned for the horror elements mixed within a survival game, and while Breathedge may not have Subnautica’s Leviathan enemy types, it does offer its own threats. Like the rest of the game, the enemies in Breathedge are slightly ridiculous in nature. Breathedge has corpse fueled coffin robots, that will occasionally threaten the player, although much of the fear players feel may derive from other elements of the game.

While there are similarities between Breathedge and Subnautica, not least of all being the game’s otherworldly setting, Breathedge may be closer to another survival horror game. Prey is an outer space horror game that revels in the players’ fear of the unknown. Prey’s outer-space setting maybe makes it a closer fit with Breathedge than Subnautica, although the gameplay and art style appears to be Subnautica inspired. Ultimately, Breathedge is possibly the perfect mixture between Subnautica and Prey that could appeal to both sets of gamers, while its satirical stylings may make it worth playing for non-survival fans. Either way, Breathedge is worth checking out, and its availability on Game Pass makes it a no brainer for Xbox and PC players.

Breathedge is out now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One
