Breathedge is a new survival game by RedRuins Softworks that places players in the cold, harsh void of outer space. While the game has been unfairly labeled by some as simply, Subnautica in space, Breathedge is set apart by its irreverent humor and its focus on exploration over combat or base-building.

Upon first leaving the starting capsule, players will find a wide array of resources and items floating around the wreck of their ship. With everything the game throws at you, it is easy to get overwhelmed in Breathedge. As such players will want to be judicious about what they collect and try to focus on making progress in the early game.

8 Safe Frequently In Multiple Slots

The Vacuum Of Space In Breathedge Is A Hostile Place.

With limited inventory space and oxygen constantly depleting, players will find it easy to make mistakes in Breathedge. As well as suffocation, some areas of the game's expansive sandbox will be inaccessible due to extreme cold or radiation.

The autosave function in Breathedge only activates upon entering a station. While on scavenging expeditions players should save often to avoid losing progress and allow for consequence-free experimentation. As well as saving their progress, players should use at least 2 slots to avoid trapping themselves in inescapable situations.

7 Touch And Scan Everything

The Scanner Is An Essential Piece Of Equipment In Breathedge

Nearly every item in Breathedge can be interacted with, although special tools will be needed for collecting resources like glass. New materials and tools are hidden in every corner of the shipwreck. While players should avoid overcrowding their inventory, it is equally important to explore the game's areas thoroughly.

The scanner is an invaluable piece of equipment that can be found in the early game. Traveling directly down from their capsule, the player will find a locked door on the wreck with the scanner attached to a panel on the right. Clicking on it will unlock the scanner blueprint and with the ability to build this item, players can start scanning objects to collect new blueprints.

6 Start With Small Items

Players Can Gather Small Items And Break Apart Larger Ones In Breathedge

When players first enter the cluttered vacuum of space they will find numerous chunks of ship and globules of fluid floating around their base. Some larger clumps of material can be broken apart by hand but it is much more effective to start by collecting smaller resources.

Gathering small objects at first will save both inventory space and time. After players have built the debugging station they will be able to make a handy scrapper that can be used to destroy the debris around their base. Breaking apart space junk is a good way of acquiring new resources fast.

5 Build Oxygen Balloons From Condoms

Running Out Of Oxygen Is The Easiest Way To Die In Breathedge

While enemies are introduced in chapter 2, the main threat to the player in Breathedge is space itself. In order to embark on longer journeys around the wreck, players will need to find ways of replenishing their oxygen as they travel.

After the player has gathered enough aluminum to make their first upgraded spacesuit, an air balloon can be found attached to the section of the wreckage directly below their starting location. Finding this object will reveal its blueprint and allow players to build their own ballons in the future. Condoms are one of the primary ingredients for air balloons and can be found near floating lockers.

4 Gather Food And Water

Nutritious Goo Is The Player's Main Source Of Food In Breathedge

As with any great survival game, players in Breathedge will need to balance their progress against maintaining their character's basic needs. Thankfully the hunger and thirst meters in the game deplete slowly and players will have plenty of time to figure out how to create food and water.

Water can be obtained from chunks of ice floating around the ship, with two units of ice needed for each measure of water. Ice can also be gathered from breaking apart asteroids and players will want to gather a lot as it is needed both for drinking and making food. Rations of food are made by combining water with nutritious goo. Players should avoid overstocking food packages as they will take up valuable inventory space.

3 Carry Spare Equipment For Long Scavenging Missions

Large Deposits Of Resources Require The Handy Scrapper To Be Gathered in Breathedge.

One of the first items the player builds is a handy scrapper that can be used to dismantle larger objects into raw materials. Equipment in Breathedge slowly degrades with every use meaning that players will often find it useful to build two scrappers to ensure they don't have to always return to their base for a replacement.

As well as carrying a spare scrapper it is useful to carry spares of most essential tools such as drills and oxygen replenishment items. Carrying multiple air candles and oxygen balloons is especially important for surviving in space

2 Find A Free Vehicle To Travel Faster

Vehicles Help Players Traverse Space At High Speed In Breathedge

Many of the best sandbox games include methods of traversing the game's sandbox quickly, be it through vehicles or fast travel systems. When first starting Breathedge, some players may find the character's slow movement speed irritating even after they have unlocked the acceleration upgrade for their suit. In order to travel further away from their base and find new resources, players will eventually need to craft or find a vehicle.

After the oxygen station in chapter 2, players will find a large room at the end of a tunnel with a ship to the right. Inside the ship, the player will find a blueprint and a functioning rocket vacuum. This is the first vehicle players can find in the early game and is an essential find for players who want to traverse space quickly and in style.

1 Keep Your Bases Breach Chance Low

Base Building Is A Slow And Risky Process In Breathedge

Base building in Breathedge is a gradual process and there are serious problems that can arise from over-expanding too early. Larger bases have a higher breach chance and players will need to find specific blueprints for reducing breach chance and automatically repairing the hull.

Breaches have to be repaired with gum, but until they have built specific systems players won't know there is a breach unless they search for it manually. Everything the player adds to their base increases breach chance so it is important to keep bases small at first. Building too big will lead to the player constantly patrolling their base plugging new holes.
