Patricia Summersett had the wonderful opportunity to voice one of video gaming's most iconic characters for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; Zelda herself. But while Nintendo's epic adventure is considered by some to be the best game of the decade, many fans had complaints about the voice acting. Summersett has since responded to those criticisms.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the first of the franchise to use voice acting (not including the infamous CD-I games). The addition came with both praise and disapproval. Some Zelda purists preferred the game be vocally silent, as it always has been (minus grunts and small one-word responses), and others simply thought the performances of the voice actors were not of the level that The Legend of Zelda deserved.

As Summersett reprised her role of Zelda in the well-received Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, some of the criticism has returned. She recently talked with Zelda Dungeon and discussed how she has dealt with the negative fan reaction. She claims that she was very sensitive to it at first, as she truly wanted everyone to be happy with it being such a beloved and big game. But Summersett has thickened her skin some over the last few years, noting that she believes positivity is important and that the vocal crowd online often can lean negative.

There’s something in that to channel as well, because that’s how Zelda feels, and she’s doing great, but she feels that way eternally, and that’s her plate. It’s very relatable in that way, I think.

Another interesting thing that Summersett mentioned was that she has found her situation relatable to Princess Zelda. Summersett talked with Game Rant in the past and claimed that she did not know who she was auditioning for when working to get the role of Zelda. But now, she has become the character for the games and has learned to channel her. In Breath of the Wild, Zelda does her absolute best, but often feels like she is falling short and failing her kingdom. Zelda feels failure and attempts to push through it and be better. Summersett finds that to be inspirational and tries to do the same.

As the holiday period approaches, there will likely be plenty of Nintendo Switch consoles under Christmas trees. New players will be able to enjoy Patricia Summersett's performance in Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. And with the sequel to Breath of the Wild's release date not yet confirmed, there will be plenty of time to continue to enjoy those titles leading up to the highly-anticipated launch; a game that Summersett will likely be reprising her role in.
