As the first major town that players are likely to explore in Breath of the Wild, there's a lot more going on in Kakariko Village than meets the eye. As a recurring setting across many different Zelda titles, Kakariko Village is often the center point for many major story beats in the franchise, and that is no exception in the latest entry in the series.
Although the village itself isn't all that large, there are many merchants, NPCs willing to give Link various tasks, and several hidden items and secrets that can be found by the player if they are willing to look for them. Kakariko Village is also the home of long time Zelda character Impa, who, in this game, sends Link on his quest to free the Divine Beasts.
Merchants
Although Kakariko isn't a big as the other major race hubs, it is still home to many merchants that will be useful to Link throughout his adventures. The main merchant in Kakariko is the Shuteye Inn, found just down the road from Impa's house and is a great place to quickly pass the time or heal up Link's hearts if he has taken a beating on the journey up the road, as there are often Bokoblins guarding the way up the mountain. The Curious Quiver, located right beside the Shuteye Inn, has everything a new adventurer will need for their ranged capabilities, though unlike later game fletchers, the Curious Quiver only has regular and Fire arrows available for purchase.
On the other side of the road, players can find High Spirits Produce which has Goat Butter, Bokoblin Guts, Bird Eggs, and Swift Carrots for sale. While most of these ingredients aren't overly useful, Goat Butter is used in a lot of food recipes that become useful once the player adds Mushrooms and Herbs to the mix to create healing items. Opposite Impa's house and a little way up the hill, players can find the Enchanted Armor Shop that has a full set of Hylian Armor and Shiekah Armor, the latter being very useful for sneaking up on enemies and getting in sneak attacks, as well as catching quick animals like Sunset Fireflys. Behind Impa's house, way up on the hill atop the waterfall, players can also find the Fang and Bone if they have already encountered Kilton on the left eye of Skull Lake.
Finally, at the top of Kakariko Village and behind the Ta'loh Naeg Shrine, players can find one of four Great Fairy Fountains where they can upgrade their armor to improve its damage resistance and passive effects gained while wearing them.
Loot and Korok Seeds
In Kakariko Village, there are several useful weapons and consumables that can be found hidden around the area, but the most prominent ones are the many food items that can be looted from wild trees as well as the handful of farms in the areas. In particular, there are many Fortified Pumpkins and Sunset Fireflies in the main farmland section behind the Enchanted Armor Shop, though both are only available to take at night. There is also a Pot Lid beside the High Spirits Produce shop and near the cooking pot that players can use as a makeshift shield, though it is nowhere near as good as other options if they are available.
In terms of weapons, there is a Rake found at the rear of the farm, but there is also an Eightfold Sword found in Lantern Lake, the lake immediately behind Impa's House. This blade is powerful but also very fragile and isn't likely to see Link through very many battles. At the top of the cliff in Lantern Lake, there is also a Phrenic Bow in a chest that needs to be dislodged with Magnesis, though it can sometimes be thrown into the water below if players aren't careful.
Of the ridiculous 900 Korok Seeds in Breath of the Wild, players can find five of them in Kakariko Village. Two of them are easily hidden though also very easy to obtain if players know where they are. By shooting the emblems on the gateway at both the entrance and exit to Kakariko village with an arrow, two Koroks will appear and give Link a seed. Behind Impa's house, there is a ring of plants that Link can dive into to release another Korok, while placing an apple in the offering area beside Impa's house will grant the fourth. The final Korok is a little trickier to obtain and will require Link to have either unlocked more of his stamina bar or the player to have cooked a handful of stamina increasing items, as they will need to climb up the cliffside that overlooks Kakariko. Up one side, there is an outcrop with a lone rock sitting atop it, which Link can lift to find the final Korok in Kakariko.
Quests
There are many quests found within Kakariko, though not all of them are readily apparent and will require talking to most of the citizens in order to find them all. The Main Quests Captured Memories, Free The Divine Beasts, and Locked Mementos can be obtained from Impa, with Captured Memories rewarding Link with the Champion's Tunic should he find at least one memory and return to Impa. The Champion's Tunic is unique among armor pieces in that it shows an enemy's health bar as a numerical value, allowing the player to know exactly how much damage they are dealing in battle.
After talking to Pikango, who is normally found in front of the campfire, he will initiate the Find the Fairy Fountain quest, which simply sends Link up the side of the mountain to find the Fairy Fountain behind the Ta'loh Naeg Shrine. After paying the Great Fairy and taking a photo of the fountain, return to Pikango to complete the quest, who will reward Link by helping him find several of the lost memories around Hyrule.
Besides High Spirits Produce, players can also talk to Koko to do four fetch quests for the young girl, where she will request several different ingredients she needs to cook her sister her favorite foods. The first two of these quests can easily be completed by simply going into High Spirits Produce and buying a Swift Carrot and Goat Butter, but the final two will require Raw Meat and Courser Bee Honey. Raw Meat can be obtained by killing Wolves while Courser Bee Honey is obtained by shooting down Beehives that hang from several trees in Hyrule, with some being found in the area around the Great Fairy Fountain in Kakariko. After completing each quest, Koko will gift Link with the same food item that she planned on cooking for her sister.
At The Curious Quiver, Link can obtain a very short side quest from the shopkeeper, Arrows of Burning Heat, which tasks Link with lighting the torches surrounding the Goddess Statue and returning to Rola, where they will reward Link with a Red Rupee. While Fire Arrows can be used for this quest, Link can also use regular arrows and use the campfire to set them alight before firing them.
One of the easiest side quests in Kakariko Village is By Firefly's Light, which can be started by talking to Lasli in her home during the evening. The quest tasks link with capturing 5 Sunset Fireflies and releasing them in Lasli's House at night to show her how pretty they look. While Sunset Fireflies can be found in Kakariko fairly easily, they are also quite skittish and need to be snuck up on in order to capture them. The Sheikah Armor, which can be bought in Kakariko, will help Link stay undetected while sneaking up on them and is a much easier way to catch 5 of them.
By talking to Cado, found beside the Cucco farm and just in front of Impa's house, Link can behind the side quest Flown the Coop, where he will have to track down all of the missing Cuccos and return them to the farm. While not overly difficult, several of the Cuccos are elusive and can be easy to miss, though the best way to see where they all are is to climb up to the Ta'loh Naeg Shrine and look over the village.
The final side quest is Playtime With Cottla, which tasks Link with playing Hide and Seek with a young girl. After finding her hiding under Impa's house, she will reward Link with a piece of Rock Salt before completing the quest.
Shrines
While one Shrine is very easy to unlock and is a part of teaching the player how to perform some of the more difficult aspects of battle, the second Shrine is much harder to unlock. In order to begin the second Shrine quest, Link needs to complete the Flown the Coop, Firefly's Light, and the Find the Fairy Fountain quests first. Once these have been completed, Link can find Paya crying over the missing Sheikah Orb in Impa's house and will task Link with finding the culprit.
After following several NPCs around at night to discover their hidden secrets, including the tragedy of a man who was killed by a monster, Dorian can be followed up to the Shrine Pedestal near the Fairy Fountain, where he will be confronted by a Yiga Bladesman. After defeating the Yiga, Dorian will reveal that he is in hiding from the Yiga clan after defecting, while the Yiga retaliated for his treachery by killing his wife and forcing him to steal the Sheikah Orb. Once complete, Link can unlock the Lakna Rokee Shrine, which also rewards him with an Edge of Duality two-handed sword. Killing the Yiga Bladesman also rewards Link with a Windcleaver, a very powerful two-handed sword that can deal ranged damage.
