It has been three years since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released, but people are still madly in love with the title. Many who enjoyed the game, along with other longtime Legend of Zelda players, have wondered if the series will ever make its way to the big screen. One fan imagined it as an animated film made by Studio Ghibli and created a promotional poster for what it might look like.
There are surely a lot of studios who could handle a project like The Legend of Zelda the right way, be it animated or live-action, but few have the reputation for storytelling and artistry like Studio Ghibli. That's why, for one Twitter user, @BigSkyCastle, none of them could capture what fans love about the series better than Ghibli could. Using the vibrant colors and simple compositions of a genuine poster from that studio, they created one of their own that depicts Breath of the Wild if it were an animated film, complete with Japanese lettering.
It's a fitting representation, especially since the Breath of the Wild art style was different from what the series typically offers. It too was very bright and full of vivid colors. The open-world style of gameplay was also a stark departure for the series which, combined with its art design, set a new standard for games of that type. So much so that other titles, like Genshin Impact, have been accused of being Breath of the Wild clones.
No one can deny The Legend of Zelda has always been popular, but the latest in the series has not only been one of the most critically-acclaimed in the series, but also one of the most beloved overall. It's proven to be such a huge success for Nintendo, that a sequel is in the works. The company has revealed very little about Link and Zelda's next adventure together, but many are hoping to hear more about it during the August 2020 Nintendo Direct.
What many are looking forward to is a glimpse at the sequel's gameplay to see how similar or different it will be to the first title. Nintendo has been tightlipped on details, so there's no telling what surprises are in store for players. The best preview so far occurred last year, when Nintendo dropped a Breath of the Wild 2 reveal trailer out of nowhere during E3 2019, surprising and delighting fans. It has since been picked apart in an effort to glean any possible information about the sequel's story.
Everything has been thrown out there, from Ganon's resurrection to time travel, but what seems to be sure is a difference in tone. Breath of the Wild, while it did have its darker moments, was mostly a light, often humorous adventure that followed the mood of a typical Zelda title. The trailer suggests something different for the sequel, however. The atmosphere, the imagery, and even the music were downright creepy. This suggests BoTW 2 may get the Majora's Mask treatment and could be a darker ride than the first game.
