The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was beloved for its open world and interactivity. Players were able to explore the map at their own leisure with something to discover or a puzzle to solve in seemingly every direction. Players can also climb anything in Breath of the Wild, opening the game's world up for exploration as players have the tools to traverse it and go anywhere they wish once they finish the tutorial.
This has led to much excitement for the sequel to Breath of the Wild, despite there being very little known about it. There are numerous fan theories about the game's story and features, including that Breath of the Wild 2 may show the end of the franchise's story. However, the game is still a ways away, and Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about what exactly fans should expect. Fans don't even know what the game's official name is yet, despite it receiving two teasers. Thankfully, there are some games spread out across the industry for fans to play while they wait for the sequel.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising
Immortals: Fenyx Rising was developed by Ubisoft, but has a lot of similarities with Breath of the Wild. The game features third-person combat with a variety of weapons and abilities, as well as a massive open world for players to explore. However, Immortals: Fenyx Rising features characters, monsters, and myths from across Greek Mythology, giving it a very distinct stylistic difference to Breath of the Wild. Players can still expect to glide across the world, solve numerous puzzles, and piece together a story as they play through the game and complete Immortals: Fenyx Rising's numerous quests.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising also has three DLC packs that change the game for its players. While the game's first DLC is primarily an expansion of the game's story, the second takes the player to an entirely new realm that substitutes Greek Mythology for Chinese, entirely changing the game's style and enemies. Even more drastically, the game's third DLC changes the game's camera to make Immortals: Fenys Rising play from a top-down perspective. This allows Immortals: Fenyx Rising to be a great alternative for fans of Breath of the Wild, while also helping mix things up so that it has its own identity for players to fall in love with.
Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm
Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm plays very similarly to older Legend of Zelda titles, but it is also a great game for Breath of the Wild fans to try. The game puts an emphasis on players exploring its open world, and it encourages players to try out different things as they play through the game. Oceanhorn 2 also features a wide variety of enemies for players to face off against and learn as well as a number of puzzles that will test players of all skill levels. Even better, Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm can be played now on Nintendo Switch.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity does not play very similarly to Breath of the Wild, but it does add to the game's story. Instead of being an open-world RPG, Age of Calamity blends the series with Dynasty Warriors and sees players decimating battlefields filled with hundreds of enemies at once. The game features many of the fanbase's favorite characters, all with their own distinct move sets and playstyles while giving players a peek at what happened before the start of Breath of the Wild, becoming one of the best-ranked Legend of Zelda spin-offs.
Middle Earth: Shadow Of War
Middle Earth: Shadow of War will appeal to Breath of the Wild fans that love either Lord of the Rings or the game's climbing and RPG elements. While the game is quite a bit darker and more gruesome than Breath of the Wild, Shadow of War features a similar spirit of exploration. Players get multiple maps to explore and learn while also being able to customize their character's abilities and take advantage of numerous powers. Since Shadow of War removed its microtransactions, now is also a perfect time to jump in and experience the game.
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact received numerous comparisons to Breath of the Wild when it was first released, and for good reason. The game features a similar spirit of exploration and allows players to climb, forage items, and glide in a fashion similar to Breath of the Wild. However, the game's combat is where it shines. Players are able to unlock various characters to build their squad. Each character has their own personality, appearance, weapon, abilities, and attunement for one of Genshin Impact's elements.
Perhaps best of all, Genshin Impact is also a free-to-play game that is consistently updated with new content. This makes it the perfect game for Breath of the Wild fans to check out on either PlayStation 4 or mobile. The game's future of planned updates also makes the game a great choice for waiting for the release of Breath of the Wild 2, as there is plenty of new content and regions that Genshin Impact still has to explore.
Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition
The Darksiders series has always worn its Legend of Zelda inspiration on its sleeve. This makes Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition a great option for Breath of the Wild fans looking for a similar experience with plenty of RPG elements. The story is a bit darker as it takes place after the apocalypse, during a war between Heaven and Hell. However, the game still features changeable equipment, puzzle-filled dungeons, and an open world for players to explore. Of course, if players really want to understand the game's story, they will likely have to read up on the Darksiders timeline or play the three other games in the series.
