After months of fan theories and speculation, players finally got a proper look at the highly anticipated sequel to 2017's incredibly popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While the trailer provided a first look at actual gameplay, eagle-eyed, or rather eagle-eared fans noticed something peculiar about the trailer's audio.
The Breath of the Wild 2 gameplay trailer comes as part of Nintendo's E3 Direct presentation. Nintendo one of the strongest showings of any of the convention's showcases, unveiling a slew of new entries for long-dormant IPs, like WarioWare: Get it Together, Super Monkey Banana Mania, and Metroid Dread, the first 2D Metroid title in nearly 20 years.
While Nintendo fans were surely interested in hearing all the company had to offer, live chats indicated that everyone was anticipating news on the newest Legend of Zelda game. At the end of the presentation, series manager Eiji Aonuma appeared onscreen, heralding news regarding the franchise. The final trailer shown was for none other than the Breath of the Wild sequel, which showed somewhat of a continuation of the events of the first BOTW sequel trailer. Link's arm has either been transformed or equipped with a mysterious device, giving him new abilities shown in the footage of the floating lands above Hyrule. However, fans noticed something familiar about the trailer's background music.
Attentive Twitter users have deduced that the trailer contains the original The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's main theme music. Twitter user Aitaikimochi points out the incredible Easter egg, noting the audio contains the same melody and notes from BOTW's theme, just inverted. While this is a well-thought-out Easter egg, it isn't the first time Nintendo has used the idea for a Zelda title. The main theme for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is set to have its HD remaster launch in just a few weeks, is a backward version of Zelda's Lullaby, the famous melody from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The Easter egg-containing trailer wasn't the only new Zelda content revealed during the presentation. In addition to revealing that BOTW 2 will be launching in 2022, Aonuma revealed a The Legend of Zelda Game & Watch. Similar to the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch released during Mario's 35th anniversary, the Zelda version contains the first two games of the franchise. Additionally, the handheld also comes loaded with the Game Boy version of the seminal title The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
