The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a groundbreaking RPG in 2017. The game took The Legend of Zelda series in a bold new open-world direction with an infusing of survival elements and a more open design philosophy. Breath of the Wild's success has fans clamoring for news on its sequel, although little has been shown of the game. From the few teasers that have been shown, however, the game seems as though it will be building off the foundation laid by Breath of the Wild, which is a great opportunity for Nintendo to iterate on the design of the original game.

Breath of the Wild also influenced many of the RPGs that have released in the years since, with one of the most notable being Ubisoft's Immortals: Fenyx RisingImmortals: Fenyx Rising took Breath of the Wild's open-world design and applied it to a world inspired by Greek Mythology. The game features a great sense of humor, tons of puzzles and exploration, and many of the features that players love about Breath of the Wild. This makes Immortals: Fenyx Rising a great game for fans of Breath of the Wild, but the game also improved on some aspects that Breath of the Wild 2 should draw from in return.

Breath of the Wild 2 Should Take Some Quality-of-Life Features

Immortals Fenyx Rising Shooting Bow at Monster

One of the biggest aspects that Immortals: Fenyx Rising improved from Breath of the Wild was the game's quality-of-life features. Breath of the Wild sees players having to sift through menus to react to what is happening in the game world. This is not a bad aspect of the game, but it can get tiresome and often breaks up the flow of combat or puzzles. Immortals: Fenyx Rising fixes this issue by allowing players to use a recommended potion or item with a single button press when the situation calls for it. If the player is gliding and running out of stamina, the game will allow players to press left on the d-pad to use a stamina potion or a health potion when players are in a particularly difficult fight. This would be of great help when players are carrying around dozens of cooked meals in Breath of the Wild 2.

Another great feature in Immortals: Fenyx Rising is its customization. The weapon degradation system in Breath of the Wild was divisive among players, as it was disappointing for players to get a cool-looking weapon just to lose it for good a little while later. Breath of the Wild 2 may not want to get rid of weapon degradation, as it was a massive part of the game's identity, but it could benefit greatly from Immortals: Fenyx Rising's customization system. The system allows players to equip the appearance of any items they have found throughout their journey and apply it to other items with better stats. This lets players look exactly how they want throughout the game without having to sacrifice better gear. This could be great for players to continue using the appearances of Breath of the Wild's best weapons without having to keep obtaining them.

Breath of the Wild 2 Should Take From Immortals: Fenyx Rising's DLC

Breath of the Wild received two DLC packs after its release, but Breath of the Wild 2's DLC should take a step in the direction of Immortals: Fenyx RisingBreath of the Wild's DLC mostly offered new items or features to the game that were helpful, but weren't very significant. It did add the Master Mode difficulty, but the packs were overall lackluster offerings for any players who had already completed the base game and didn't want to replay it. Immortals: Fenyx Rising, on the other hand, received three DLC packs that each were their own experiences. The game's second DLC, Myths of the Eastern Realm, took the game to an entirely new Mythology with a unique story, protagonist, and area to experience.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising's third DLC, The Lost Gods was even more transformative. It changed Immortals: Fenyx Rising's camera to be top-down, giving it an entirely new feel and unique gameplay to the rest of the game. Breath of the Wild 2 does not have to feature DLC that alters the game as drastically, but it would benefit from releasing larger DLC packs with meaningful gameplay additions. It would be great to see the sequel release DLC that adds entirely new areas to the map with their own mechanics or smaller stories to experience. This would help the DLC feel more impactful and worth the money for players, while also ensuring that Breath of the Wild 2 feels like the step forward for the series.

Breath of the Wild 2 Should Take From Immortals: Fenyx Rising's Combat

Breath of the Wild 2 should also take some lessons from the combat in Immortals: Fenyx RisingBreath of the Wild's combat is enjoyable on its own, but is arguably one of the weaker elements of the game. Combat in Immortals: Fenyx Rising is much smoother, and it allows players to quickly switch between multiple weapons and integrate powers into their combos and movements. This would be great in Breath of the Wild 2, and would help the game feel much more fun and rewarding to master. It would be especially beneficial if the rumors are true and players will be fighting returning characters like Demise and Ghirahim in Breath of the Wild 2, as a new combat system would help make those fights more interesting.

Having a more complicated combat system would also allow Breath of the Wild 2 to incorporate more unlockable powers and abilities similar to Immortals: Fenyx Rising. This would be great in helping the player feel more powerful as they play the game, as well as letting players better react to encounters or features like losing a powerful weapon to degradation. It would be particularly interesting to see what powers could be included in the game with how Breath of the Wild 2 seems to be including time travel into its main plot. Of course, there is no way of knowing what changes will be made in Breath of the Wild 2 until the game releases, but hopefully players will receive news soon.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is currently in development.
