Square Enix has confirmed that the mobile game Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights will be discontinuing its services within 2023. Brilliant Lights is a spin-off game of the highly-acclaimed Bravely Default series, first launched in January 2022, exclusively in Japan. This meant this game had a little over a year's worth of functionality before it was shut down.Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights was a single-player mobile RPG that plays similarly to its console brethren, retaining the Brave and Default mechanics to use actions. While this free-to-play game contained in-app purchases, it didn't use gacha mechanics for its characters, but for the weapons instead. There is also a premium currency known as mythril, which can be used to buy costumes and characters from past Bravely Default games. Despite having a strong start with 4 million users within its first two weeks, services will be shut down early next year.RELATED: Bravely Default Producer Hints At Possible Remaster of First GameThis was announced via a blog post on Square Enix's website, where it states that it regrets informing its users that Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights will be discontinued on February 28, 2023. The management team acknowledge that fans who had been loyally playing the game are going to be shocked, apologizing for the inconvenience, but still thanking them all the same. According to the post, the developers wanted to provide the best service to its player base, but eventually came to the conclusion that future services would be unsatisfactory, resulting in this game's termination.

With Brilliant Lights' impending shutdown, all in-game purchases for the Mythril premium currency are discontinued starting today. Any Mythril that has been purchase can be used until the end of services, with any unused Mythril being refunded to customers. There will be a final chapter of the main story that will be added to the game, along with event quests related to the game's first anniversary, along with other features before the game shuts down completely.

Fans who maintained their interest in this spin-off however aren't being totally left in the cold, as Square Enix plans on releasing an offline version of the game in the future. This version will allow fans to look back at various characters and their stories after the game's service ends, with more information being announced at a future date. This shutdown however joins a long line of Square Enix-related shutdowns next year, including Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, Chocobo GP, and Babylon's Fall. Fans are hoping that the 3D models and other elements in this game can be used for future projects like the rumored Bravely Default remaster.

Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights will end its services on February 28, 2023.
