The second sequel for Bravely Default was showcased during Thursday morning's Nintendo Direct. During the presentation, Square Enix showed an extended gameplay trailer for the JRPG, teasing the game's protagonists and several key settings. To cap off the trailer, its also been announced that a new Bravely Default 2 free demo is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Bravely Default 2 will take place on the continent of Excillent, described as being home to five mighty kingdoms. Seth, a young sailor, washes up on the shore of a beach where he's found by Gloria, a princess of a lost kingdom. The party is rounded out by Elvis, a traveling scholar, and Adelle, a mercenary. Together, the group will take on a grand and mysterious adventure in traditional JRPG fashion.

The trailer also explored Bravely Default 2's job system. Like the classic Final Fantasy games that inspired it, Bravely Default 2 implements a job system. Characters will equip "Asterisks" to take on new jobs and will earn new Asterisks from defeating enemies who are wielding them, as well. Characters will also be able to equip two Asterisks at a time, with both a job and a sub-job, to become all the more powerful.

Bravely Default 2 is a direct sequel to the original Bravely Default game, released in 2012. Fans may recall that a different sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer, was released in 2016. It's unclear whether that sequel is no longer canon, or whether there's a deeper story to tell about the three games' connection.

Bravely Default 2 is planned for release in 2020 on Nintendo Switch.
