At this point Batman may be one of the most adapted characters in all of storytelling, right up there with Sherlock Holmes. He's been in comics, movies, TV shows, books, and songs in just about every genre imaginable, so it shouldn't be any surprise that there's yet another Batman story on the way, this time exclusive to Spotify. The brand new scripted podcast, titled Batman Unburied, will arrive 2021.
While the details of the podcast are still under wraps, it was confirmed that David S. Goyer would be executive producer for the project. For those unfamiliar, Goyer was the writer for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, and received story credits on The Dark Knight as well as The Dark Knight Rises, so it's safe to say he knows a little bit about the caped crusader. He is reportedly the originator for the story of Batman Unburied, which is expected to delve deeper into Bruce Wayne's psychology and the darker aspects of his personality.
Goyer seemed excited about working with Batman in a format that he's always enjoyed: “I’ve been a fan of narrative podcasts for some time and was looking for the right story — returning to Batman seems like the perfect opportunity. We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery.” That last sentence in particular paves the way for a lot of speculation about who, or what, might appearing to face off with the Dark Knight. Many of Batman's foes could be considered nightmarish, but it does make one wonder if Goyer will return yet again to Scarecrow, one of Batman's villains who is very closely associated with psychology and nightmares.
Spotify also seems excited about the project, with Chief Content Officer Dawn Ostroff commenting, “David Goyer is an exceptional talent, and we can think of no better leader to leverage the infinite possibilities of podcasting to bring the nearly 300 million Spotify users around the world a Batman saga for the ages.” Hopefully the podcast will be as engaging as other classic Batman inventions, and pave the way for the other audio dramas being developed by DC and Spotify.
Batman Unburied will release exclusively on Spotify in 2021.
