While few would describe the Borderlands series’ story as complex, now that the narrative encompasses some three games players might be wondering how things all tie together. That is especially true when one considers that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as the name implies, tells a story that sits between the first and second Borderlands games.
To help players sort things out, Gearbox Software and 2K Australia have put together a handy timeline of the events in all three Borderlands games. Unfortunately, that means those players who’ve yet to complete the Pre-Sequel will want to wait until after they’ve finished the game to check the timeline out.
However, players who were hoping for a deep chronological breakdown of the franchise thus far will find that the timeline serves as more of an overview. The timeline chooses to recount Borderlands from a surface perspective, only hitting the most important events in the three games.
Again, there are some spoilers in the timeline so be warned. But those who are brave enough can click the thumbnail below to check it out.
Interestingly enough, the timeline also doesn’t delve deep into the DLC expansions for Borderlands, which have arguably some of the richest storytelling in the entire series. Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, for example, features Borderlands at its best: humorous, endlessly creative, and filled with tons of colorful characters.
Now that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has hit, we’re left to wonder whether the franchise will continue in the next-gen. Or rather, not whether it will but whether it should.
Borderlands 2 was a genuine high point for the series, but fans seem mostly ambivalent about the idea of a current-gen sequel, or pre-sequel. And when Gearbox Software revealed their next project was Battleborn not Borderlands 3 or Borderworlds, they put a lot of questions out into the ether.
Ultimately we’ll have to wait and see how the Pre-Sequel does sales-wise to determine what the future holds. Well, first we’ll have to wait for the inevitable next-gen re-release of The Pre-Sequel, and THEN we can talk about the future of the franchise.
What has been your favorite moment from the Borderlands series? Do you think the series should continue?
