Undoubtedly, one of the biggest actors in Hollywood at this point in time is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He is such a well-known and diverse talent that the creative director of Gearbox Software wants the action movie-oriented performer to portray robot guide Claptrap in the Borderlands movie adaptation.

Now that a Borderlands film adaptation is in the works, preceded by a Borderlands fan film from a few years ago, Gearbox Software is working with Lionsgate to mobilize the production of the movie. Few details are known about the movie at this point, and so far no actors have been cast in any roles. However, Gearbox Software creative director Paul Sage said that he is very supportive of casting former WWE star Dwayne Johnson as the comic relief robot known as Claptrap.

In a recent interview where he spoke about the upcoming Borderlands 3, Sage briefly discussed the movie adaptation. Expressing that he was completely behind the film adaptation of the popular post-apocalyptic shooter, Sage was later asked who would be the ideal candidate for Claptrap. He stated, "I think The Rock. Yeah, The Rock has to play Claptrap!”

The Future of Video Game Movies - The Rock Fast and the Furious

While it might seem unusual for a man as burly and with such stature as The Rock, the pick might actually be somewhat sensible. In many of his diverse roles, Johnson has displayed quick and clever delivery with overwhelming charisma. While Claptrap doesn't fit all of these qualities, the robot on wheels is fast-talking and always guided the player with passion. Perhaps the best sense of his ability to sink into any role is that Johnson is embodying Danny DeVito for the Jumanji sequel.

It also stands to reason for him to play another video game character given his past performances in movie adaptations of video games. Starting with the Doom film from 2005, The Rock has also starred in the Rampage movie and has expressed interest in a Call of Duty: Black Ops film adaptation. In other words, he is practiced in the video game film genre.

Whatever the feelings of Sage and fans of The Rock and Claptrap, nothing is set in stone. In the meantime, fans of the Borderlands franchise can look to the game sequel's upcoming release.
