In August of 2015, it was announced that Borderlands would be adapted into a feature-length film. This will mark the first adaptation of the popular game series, and it begs the question of how the it will fit into the game series. With little information released about the film since the announcement, director Eli Roth (Hostel) recently shared some more details about what fans can expect from Borderlands.

Roth explained that the film will be made in a way so that people who have never played the Borderlands games will still be able to enjoy the film, and hopefully it will persuade those individuals to try out them out. Veteran players of the game series, however, can still expect plenty of Easter eggs and references in the film that others might not pick up. Roth has already announced that the film has finally wrapped up filming and teased an exclusive image of Claptrap (who will be voiced by Jack Black).

Roth told Collider that he hopes to emulate what the Tomb Raider movie accomplished: a fun adventure film where viewers needed no knowledge of the games. Hardcore fans will love the attention to detail with regards to the Borderlands game series, while newcomers will hopefully enjoy the action and adventure the film has to offer. The movie will be made in collaboration with Lionsgate, per the film's original announcement. Fans can also anticipate some levels of humor to lie throughout the film, with Hangover Part II scriptwriter Craig Mazin as the screenplay writer.

The Borderlands adaptation also has an incredible cast lined up. Cate Blanchett is starring as the protagonist Lilith alongside Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Gina Gershon as Moxxi, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, and more. Filming wrapped up quickly, only just starting in April and finishing up in June. There is no release date or rating set yet, but fans can expect more details to come in the next few months.

With Borderlands being at the forefront of popular videogames over the past decade, a screen adaptation only feels natural. The franchise now will join other large gaming franchises such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Mortal Kombat.

Film and TV adaptations of games have grown over the years, offering fans a unique look into their favorite video games series. With the incredible cast and crew behind the upcoming Borderlands film, fans can anticipate an exciting action-packed adaptation of the classic game series.

Borderlands does not have an announced release date.
