Update 2/20: Eli Roth has now been officially confirmed to be the Borderlands movie director. Original story follows.

Borderlands movie adaptation was officially announced last year, and it looks like it's found its director. Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford tweeted out and then quickly deleted the announcement that the Borderlands movie would be directed by Eli Roth, with more information set to come at PAX East on February 27.

Pitchford likely deleted the tweet because he made the announcement prematurely. It's possible that the reveal of Eli Roth as the Borderlands movie director is supposed to happen at PAX East itself, or maybe it was being saved for some other time. Whatever the case may be, it seems like Eli Roth's horror movie background should lend itself well to the Borderlands series, as the games are often filled with over-the-top violence.

For those who may not recognize Eli Roth, his first directorial effort was 2002's Cabin Fever. Since then, he's directed films like HostelThe Green Inferno, and The House With A Clock in Its Walls. Roth is also known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, appearing in some of his films as an actor as well as directing one of the fake trailers featured in the Grindhouse movie.

The reveal that Roth is directing the Borderlands movie is the first major bit of information about what will the film will entail. Fans are still waiting to learn about things like casting, the storyline, a possible release date, and more. We know that Gearbox wants The Rock to play Claptrap, but nothing has actually been announced.

In lieu of official Borderlands movie casting, fans have created their own lists of who they'd like to see star in the film. This has included suggestions like Ryan Reynolds as Rhys and Karen Gillan as Lilith. With the film still early in production, though, fans shouldn't expect to see any concrete casting information for quite some time - unless, of course, there's some surprises in store for the Borderlands 3 PAX East showcase.

While it's hard to say what new Borderlands movie information will come out of PAX East, we do know what fans can expect in regards to Borderlands 3. Gearbox has already confirmed that Borderlands 3 DLC 2 will be showcased at the event, so fans can look forward to learning more about the looter-shooter's next big expansion come February 27.

Borderlands is in the works at Lionsgate Studios.
