Out of the four original Vault Hunters, Lilith is undoubtedly the most important character in the Borderlands series. While the bromance between Mordecai and Brick is always fun, and Roland’s loss is still being felt by characters like Tiny Tina, Lilith has found herself at the heart of Borderlands narratives from the very beginning. Whether she was fighting the Destroyer in the first game, killing Handsome Jack in the sequel, or interrogating Athena in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, she always has something interesting to do.

Borderlands 3 saw Lilith needing to own up to her leadership role, guiding the Crimson Raiders despite the loss of her powers near the start of the game. While she ultimately recovers these abilities, she only gets them back in time to stop Elpis from destroying Pandora, crashing into the moon to prevent the destruction. Though it initially seemed like this act killed her, it turns out that this was not the case, leaving Borderlands 4 with some big questions to answer.

Borderlands 4 Needs To Answer Where Lilith Went and Why

Borderlands 3 Lilith

The Murder Mystery Missions from Borderlands 3’s Director’s Cut DLC not only recontexualized the events of the main campaign, but they also confirmed that Lilith is alive. The final line of the DLC sees Ava making it known that the Crimson Raiders have a new mission to find their lost leader, though it is entirely unclear where she went and why she did so.

The final red chest of Borderlands 3 is also something worth noting, as Tannis states that she has no idea where it came from and that Lilith was keeping it secret from the rest of the passengers on the ship. For someone that is an expert in Sirentology to have no idea where this special chest originated suggests that Lilith has visited an unmapped area at some point in the past, though it is unknown why she did so. Perhaps there is a location important to Sirens beyond Athenas, or maybe she found another place that was important to the Guardians.

Wherever this chest originated, it is clearly important to Lilith, and it can be assumed that this is where she went after giving Elpis its Firehawk aesthetic. Why she would not come back to tell the Crimson Raiders she was still alive is a mystery, though, as they would surely go with her if she asked. Perhaps she has a dark side that fans do not know about, or maybe she is looking into a way to bring Roland back from the dead but does not want to get the crew's hopes up. She could have been taken captive or may even be looking for a weapon to help in The Watcher’s war; just about anything is on the table.

While Borderlands 4 could resolve the questions around Lilith early on it is story, or even in its reveal trailer, it seems like the mystery will serve as the main focus of the next game. With players potentially hunting for a person instead of Vaults, perhaps the playable Vault Hunters will be characters with an attachment to Lilith. Ava and Tiny Tina could both work as Vault Hunters, while it could also be interesting to take control of a more fleshed out version of Brick or Mordecai.

For now, all that Borderlands fans can do is speculate on where Lilith went and why. Though Borderlands 3’s ending suggested that Lilith may have died, things were left open-ended, and eventually the game’s final DLC confirmed that her story is not yet over. As long as Gearbox explains what Lilith has been up to and provides some insight on the mysterious weapon chest that she had in her room aboard Sanctuary, then Borderlands 4 should have no problem delivering a satisfying narrative.
