Saying that Borderlands 3 features a lot of guns is an understatement. In all the marketing leading up to the game’s release, Gearbox jokingly stated that the game featured 87 bazillion guns. In reality, the number was closer to 1 billion, though that was still an incredible feat. Randomly generated parts and stats led to a ridiculous number of guns being available in the game, with players never being able to find every single weapon. Still, whenever Borderlands 4 is revealed, it could easily feature 88 bazillion guns or more.

While topping Borderlands 3 in terms of storytelling may be easy for the next main entry in the series, outdoing its gameplay could prove more difficult. While fans still had their complaints, like too much focus being placed on annointments and a lack of raid bosses, the build variety, movement, and core gunplay were all excellent. However, one way that Borderlands 4 can improve upon what came before is by introducing even more guns to the mix, with more weapon rarities and weapon types being made available to players.

How New Weapon Types Could Increase Borderlands 4’s Weapon Count

Part of what allows Borderlands 3’s weapon count to be so high is the massive variety of weapon types that are available. Each weapon manufacturer in Borderlands puts their own spin on every type of gun, with a Dahl pistol being very different from a COV one. As such, Borderlands 4 should go out of its way to add new weapon types and manufacturers to the universe.

As far as weapon types are concerned, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ melee weapons are a great place to start. These could prove to be a ton of fun to use, making melee-only builds a lot more diverse and exciting than they are currently. While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ melee weapons all fit its fantasy setting, as players can expect things like axes and maces to drop after a boss kill, it would be great to see them in Borderlands 4. Tina could become a manufacturer of the melee weapons, with the bows seen in the gameplay trailer included as well.

At the same time, wielding a futuristic Maliwan blade that resembles Zer0’s sword could be a lot of fun, and it shows how crucial the manufacturers are to Borderlands’ success. As such, introducing a new weapon company could allow for fresh spins on every weapon type, meaning that players get several new kinds of guns to add to their arsenal. With the potential to add a new weapon maker in Borderlands 4, or bring back something like the laser guns seen in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, there could be even more weapon types to randomly generate - guaranteeing that the next game has even more guns for gamers to mess around with.

How New Weapon Rarities Could Increase Borderlands 4’s Weapon Count

On top of a new manufacturer and extra weapon types, more weapon rarities would be great to see in the next game. Specifically, Borderlands 4 should bring back Pearlescent weapons. In the original Borderlands, these were exclusive to the Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC, with the cyan guns being the rarest weapons that players could obtain. As such, Borderlands 4 could make them exclusive to Mayhem 10 raid bosses, takedowns, or other endgame content. This way, only players that have mastered the game could get the best guns, with there being some extremely special weapons for high-level players to grind for. The rainbow-colored Effervescent weapons would also be great to see again.

Borderlands 4 should also consider bringing back Seraph weapons. While these items were tied to raid bosses in Borderlands 2 and had to be bought from special vendors, they could be reworked for the next big Borderlands game. The neat (and sometimes frustrating) aspect of Seraph weapons was that, while they were incredibly strong, they all came with a downside. These intentionally glitchy weapons saw a piece of broken code in their stat card that gave them things like awful reload speed of horrible accuracy. In Borderlands 4, this could become just another rarity, with Seraph variants of basic and legendary weapons able to be obtained. Players could build around the buggy weapons, making them a lot stronger than the normal versions of guns when in the right hands. More importantly, this would help lead to much deeper loot pool.

Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
