As the third numbered entry and the fourth mainline entry in the Borderlands series, Borderlands 3 tries its best to welcome new players without handholding veterans. Still, there are some elements to the game that simply aren’t overtly obvious, and in some cases, they are essential for advancing in the game.
One element that new Borderlands 3 players might not be aware of is how best to make money. Sure, completing missions always awards money and there are loot boxes with money scattered around the world, but there is a better way to make money in the game that stands out above all else.
While players might think to get rid of their loot as soon as they find a better replacement, it’s very important to save everything (at first). And when the backpack is full, look at the associated value of each item and try to hold on to the loot that carries the highest price.
Once Borderlands 3 players have some cool weapons like the One Pump Chump Shotgun and other gear that they don’t want to use, head to any vending machine. Tab over to the right (using the right shoulder button on console) and then choose any items to sell back to the vending machine.
To start, players will only get about $100 per item but the value will increase the further they progress. Selling items back to the vending machines is a great way to make tons of money, which can either be used to purchase items from those same machines or to upgrade the SDU (storage deck unit). In fact, if players want to upgrade their backpack SDU, they can carry more loot without needing to return to a vending machine and make more money in the process.
Usually, there are going to come tough situations where players will need to choose to drop some loot. That’s why we recommend looking at the value of gear and only keeping the highest value items. One would think that the higher the loot rarity in Borderlands 3 then the higher the value, but that isn’t always the case. And in most cases, the really high rarity Borderlands 3 loot is better to keep than to sell anyway.
