Over the past three years, Borderlands 3 has been celebrating Valentine’s Day with its special Broken Hearts Day in-game event and challenge, awarding players with exclusive weapons and cosmetics for their Vault Hunters. This Borderlands 3 event is usually celebrated by completing event-related challenges independently or cooperatively. These challenges are usually related to what the Borderlands series is best known for, shooting and looting.

Broken Hearts Day event began for a limited time in 2020, after the release of Borderlands 3 in 2019. The past events mostly awarded players with a larger variety of cosmetics revolving around the theme of Valentine’s Day. These cosmetics are usually skins for characters, devices, and weapons. The rewards in 2020 also included two weapons and one trinket. The Broken Hearts Day event in 2021 had fewer cosmetics available as rewards, only a device and character skin, alongside a trinket. This year awards a single, yet impressive, collectible Gray Matter Vault Hunter Head.

To obtain this reward, players first must activate the event through the main menu, then locate and speak to Maurice on Sanctuary III. This NPC will ask players to break 1,000,000 hearts that spawn above enemies during the Broken Hearts Day event, starting February 11 to February 25. Every broken heart by the community will be counted in total, with the occasional progress being shared on the official Borderlands’ Twitter account. As one of the best split-screen games, this will be a good opportunity for the Borderlands series fans to return to the franchise for the celebration of this holiday.

Borderlands 3 is admired for its arsenal of absurdity, and this event seems no exception in that regard. Being the fastest and best-selling game of 2K Games, the developer wanted to make it special for the players. With that in mind, the hearts above the enemies will have various forms and effects. As reported by 2K Games, some hearts will drop loot, others spawn toxic fumes, create large fireballs, and some will briefly turn enemies into allies.

Presumably, this could be the last Broken Hearts Day event for Borderlands 3, as 2K Games and Gearbox Entertainment could be focusing on Borderlands 4 by now. This is why this year’s event seems special, as the rewards will be given to all community members as a SHiFT code once 1,000,000 hearts are collectively broken. And while Borderlands 3 is no longer an actively-played game, fans of the franchise could be interested in participating in a community-wide challenge and uncovering missable side-quests in Borderlands 3 along the way.

Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
