It's been seven years since the launch of Borderlands 2, so there has been a considerable amount of hype for Borderlands 3. Now that the game is out, it's earned mostly positive reviews, and has become a bonafide sales hit for publisher 2K Games, breaking records for the company and blowing the sales of Borderlands 2 out of the water.

As announced by 2K Games, Borderlands 3 has had the most successful launch in the publisher's history, selling 50% more units in the first five days on sale than Borderlands 2. Additionally, Borderlands 3 is now the best-selling PC game for 2K, which is especially impressive when one considers the fact that the game skipped Steam and other digital storefronts entirely to release as an Epic Games Store exclusive.

With the massive sales success of Borderlands 3, the Borderlands franchise has now passed $1 billion total, which is an impressive milestone in and of itself, and makes the franchise one of the most successful in gaming history. And while its launch day sales are certainly impressive, Borderlands 3 fans can expect the game to continue selling well in the future, especially if the Borderlands 3 Switch port ever materializes.

While a Borderlands 3 Switch port may or may not come to pass, we do know that Borderlands 3 is coming to more platforms in the future, which will only serve to make the game more successful. Eventually, Borderlands 3 will leave the Epic Games Store and come to Steam, and the game is also in the works for Google Stadia. There will also likely be a "Game of the Year" edition down the road that will bundle the game with all its DLC at a discount, which will no doubt see another sales surge for the popular looter-shooter.

With Borderlands 3 enjoying unprecedented sales success for 2K Games and the Borderlands franchise, it guarantees that the series will continue with a fourth entry at some point down the road. But in the more immediate future, Borderlands 3 fans can look forward to the Bloody Harvest event, in addition to other limited-time events and and more substantial story DLC that's coming as part of the season pass.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
