Amid the growing controversy surrounding Troy Baker not returning as Rhys in Borderlands 3, many fans are dying to know if the beloved Tales From the Borderlands character will be appearing in the highly anticipated sequel. Rhys is the new head of the Atlas Corporation, which will serve as a focal point in a key plotline against Maliwan, and many fans will be delighted to hear that Rhys will be making appearances in the game.

Thanks to the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal event, we got some hands-on time playing a mission called "Hostile Takeover" which puts players right in the middle of a war between Atlas and Maliwan on the planet of Promethea. Players will team up with Lorelei, a new NPC and the apparent questgiver on Promethea, and contact Rhys to help put an end to the Maliwan siege. While it is not currently know how big of a role Rhys will play over the course of Borderlands 3, he does seem to be the center of the chaos on Promethea. It seems that Borderlands 3 will feature several planets, so Rhys may not play a major role outside of the Maliwan/Atlas war.

Rhys made a small appearance in the official Borderlands 3 reveal trailer standing by Zer0, one of the vault hunters from Borderlands 2. Zer0 makes an appearance during the "Hostile Takeover" mission, so perhaps all of the other vault hunters from Borderlands 2 will make an appearance as well. Maya is seen in the trailer as well, but Axton, Salvador, Gaige, and Krieg are noticeably absent. Hopefully, they will be worked into the larger Borderlands 3 story to take down the Calypso Twins when players get the full experience this fall.
