Report: Borderlands 3 to Release in 2019

The past few years have seen news of Borderlands 3 in the form of delays, tech demos from conferences, and reports of being absent from popular trade shows. The rumors began to swirl once again for the next game in the Borderlands series, with reports coming in on a possible release year for one of Gearbox Software's most popular franchises.

News of a rumored launch window comes by way of a video from Youtube channel The Tripe S League. The biggest takeaway from the video is that two anonymous sources have confirmed the upcoming  Borderlands 3 has begun the localization process, which means the game is being prepped in different languages to release for different countries. Going off the natural progression of video game development, localization is one of the final steps in completing a game.

Localization for Borderlands 3 was also said to have begun just a couple months ago, meaning those waiting for updates on the game may not have much longer until a big announcement from Gearbox. Hopefully, in terms of the localization process, there shouldn't be too much time left until completion, especially considering the majority of the team at Gearbox is said to be working solely on the series' third entry.

The rumored release window also falls in line with a previous statement from Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick. Just a few months ago, Zelnick made comments of a 'highly anticipated game', likely Borderlands 3, would be delayed into the company's 2020 fiscal year, meaning the game could launch anytime between April 1, 2019 and March 30, 2020. Taking both Zelnick's comments and the apparently near-completion of the game, all signs point towards the game releasing sometime in the first half of Take-Two's fiscal year.

It isn't exactly clear if development for Borderlands 3 has gone through any struggles, but the decisions to keep radio silent by avoiding any sort of conference showing have been a question for concern. If these sources appear to be true, it seems like Borderlands 3's best chance of a release date announcement at a major conference could be later this year at The Game Awards, even more so now that it's been confirmed there will be no PlayStation Experience this year.

Borderlands 3 is currently in development for unspecified platforms.
