Perhaps the biggest addition to Borderlands 2 in the new Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary DLC is the variety of rainbow rarity weapons and items to collect, and many presumed this was to build hype for the new rarity as part of the threequel's release. However, according to the Borderlands 3 Japanese website, it may not have rainbow or pearlescent rarities at launch.

This decision on Gearbox's part isn't without precedent, either. Though it has been quite some time, many will remember that Borderlands 2 did not receive the pearlescent rarity until a few months after launch. And this seems to be the case for Borderlands 3, as the aforementioned website only lists 5 rarities and the legendary (orange) rarity as the highest. As always with translations, it is possible that something was lost in translation, but it doesn't appear to be that way.

This would then suggest that Borderlands 3 will not see either the pearlescent or rainbow rarities at launch, and while this may disappoint some, it's worth mentioning that this could go a long way for the replayability of the game. With a director recently stating how long it will take to beat Borderlands 3, this spacing will allow players to beat the main game, the initial endgame material, and grind for legendaries before introducing new DLC and new weapon tiers.

While little is currently known about the endgame, Pitchford promised it was "more" than previous entries, and we know that it will be composed of premium DLC and free events. It also seems likely that the initial Borderlands 3 endgame will also feature at least one raid boss for players to grind for the aforementioned legendary weapons.

It's possible that this information gets a solid confirmation prior to launch from a Gearbox dev, but the latest players will find out is indubitably the approaching launch of Borderlands 3. Whether as Amara the Siren, Zane the Operative, FL4k the Beastmaster, or Moze the Gunner, Borderlands fanatics will take on the role of a new Vault Hunter in a brand new story with brand new guns in less than three months.

Borderlands 3 releases September 13 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
