Gearbox continues to provide a wellspring of information about the upcoming Borderlands 3 leading up to the game’s release next month. The developer announced a new planet today that players will get to explore.
So far, the developer has revealed two other planets that players will visit alongside the series staple Pandora. But today, the Borderlands Twitter revealed a trailer for a fourth planet called Athenas which is described as a misty and tranquil place that has some secrets to hide.
Athenas, which otherwise sits uninhabited, provides a home for a sect of Monks. The sect goes by the ominous name “Order of the Impending Storm” and the Borderlands website teases that they guard some ancient secret. This hints at new lore behind the upcoming game’s world.
Athenas is mostly uninhabited, save for a sect of monks known as the Order of the Impending Storm. What secrets do they guard inside those ancient walls? #LetsMakeSomeMayhem— Borderlands 3 (@Borderlands) August 12, 2019

In a recent interview, senior producer Anthony Nicholson said that Borderlands 3 will far surpass Borderlands 2 in scale. The reveal of another new planet supports that claim. Pandora has served as the sole setting for the games in the past.
So far, Gearbox has showed off multiple new planets for players to explore in Borderlands 3. Last week, it showed off the swamp-like planet Eden-6. It has also announced a planet called Promethea.
Players will get to travel between these planets. This opens up new opportunities for sizable content expansions and exploration. Perhaps this will help win back some of the players who have chosen to boycott Borderlands 3. The series lore has mentioned other planets in the past but no previous game has featured interstellar travel.
Borderlands 3 has had a rocky road leading up to its release. Between difficulties with voice actors, strange leaks, and controversial choices by Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford, it’s a miracle the game is coming out at all.
In the meantime, fans can continue to scour over the website and trailers to try to pick up as much information and lore as they can about these new planets. Each one has a fairly distinct look, and from the sounds of it they will each feature different enemy types and new kinds of gameplay.
Gearbox hasn’t discussed specifically how many new planets players can expect in the game. Assuming it reveals all of them before launch, it shouldn’t be too many more. While eager fans wait for the September release date to arrive, they can start planning their character builds now. Gearbox has revealed an official interactive version of Borderlands 3’s skill trees.
Borderlands 3 launches on September 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
