The Borderlands universe is one of great heroes, incredibly mighty beings and alien entities, sealed monsters and treasures, invisible power battles, and more worldly conflicts fought with tons of guns. Borderlands 3, much like its predecessors, never takes itself too seriously, or at least not for too long. The games always had the potential for becoming something more than what they have always been, and it shows with all the times when players called for the series to have an MMO game within its ranks.

After all, many popular MMORPG aspects are already in the games, with the grind for loot, the character-building (and, in a more limited way, character customization), the main and side quests, and the overall feeling of always improving the characters through different means, it's all there. However, before Gearbox Software actually moved onto something bigger, whether it is an MMO or another Borderlands game, it seems the company wanted to expand the lore and the extent of the macro cosmos beyond Pandora. In fact, Borderlands 3 does just that its planets and Siren-heavy lore

However, the Borderlands series also has overarching stories, and one that was left untold to this day is the Watcher's premonition about an incoming war at the end of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The Watcher said there was no time for bickering because of an impending war where all Vault Hunters would be needed. This war was not so impending, though, because the events of The Pre-Sequel and those of Borderlands 3 were a few years apart. And that war did not happen.

Borderlands 3, The Watcher's War, And The Future

The events of Borderlands 3 do seem like an all-out war, with entire planets being at war with Maliwan, Maliwan trying to absorb or destroy Atlas, the Calypso Twins having an entire army of bandits that do their bidding, and a series of events leading to the Great Vault being opened, the rise and fall of old and new Sirens, and The Destroyer awoken once again, albeit partly. Still, this whole plot was not the ominous war that felt like a Damocles' sword back at the end of The Pre-Sequel. Many are likely curious what was the Watcher talking about, then?

It could be that the Watcher was referring to a war that is going to come in a future game, one that's not exactly like all other mainline Borderlands games. Considering the fans' demands, and considering the specific words used by the Watcher, stating how all Vault Hunters would be needed to fight, it is not that unlikely that a new game may allow players to make their own Vault Hunter and delve much, much deeper into the universe of Borderlands.

Whether this war will pan out as a regular armed conflict, or whether it will be shaped by other beings such as Sirens, Guardians, and more alien entities, it is yet to be seen. However, it is very likely that an MMO game would fit the criteria for the Watcher's premonition, and considering how oddly specific the focus of Borderlands 3 was on Sirens, they are likely going to be playing a big role either in the premise or the unfolding of the events of this upcoming war. Notably, the last DLC for BL3 doubles down on this concept and could hint at it itself.

Borderlands 3 also focused on a long-dead Siren, Nyriad, that had borne the same powers, gifts, and curses of Tyreen - the leech. Nyriad seems to be a key character in Borderlands lore, with her being the reason the Eridians are dead and the Destroyer imprisoned, all while the Watcher observed her passively. Maybe, Sirens will wake ancient beings too powerful for a handful of Vault Hunters to take on themselves, or maybe a war between the Guardians and the Sirens will come. Whatever the ploy, it makes sense to have a Borderlands MMO addressing the Watcher's war, and hopefully, it will eventually come true.

No Borderlands MMO is currently known to be in the works.
