Ever since Borderlands developer Gearbox Software held a panel during PAX East 2019 to reveal Borderlands 3, fans of the first-person shooter franchise have been clamoring for as much information as possible about the next entry in the series, with many wondering how the scale of the third entry will compare to previous titles. With this being the case, the video game development company's CEO Randy Pitchford recently decided to tease what the map size will be like for Borderlands 3.

According Pitchford, Borderlands 3 is going to be "a lot bigger than past games" overall, but the Gearbox CEO stopped short at providing specific examples as to exactly how large the map will actually be. Nevertheless, Pitchford did say, "Locations all vary. Some are bigger than past averages, some are smaller." This will likely spark plenty of speculation among fans in regards to which areas in the Borderlands 3 reveal trailer will provide the largest spaces.

While it's safe to presume many Borderlands 3 players would prefer if the map sizes for the majority of the game's explorable areas were remarkably larger than previous entries in the first-person shooter franchise, boosting the scale of the environments just for the sake of it could lead to unwanted filler content. Nevertheless, the game seems set to continue the series' trend of being rooted in loot-driven gameplay, and with Borderlands 3 boasting over one billion guns, there will undoubtedly be plenty of materials that won't be as significant as others anyhow.

When it comes to traversing the map in Borderlands 3, it appears as if Gearbox will be providing players with an updated UI that gives them a 3D minimap to help navigate the game's various environments. As some Borderlands fans may recall, the original game only had a compass rather than a minimap, and Borderlands 2 featured a traditional 2D minimap, so it will be interesting to see how well Gearbox incorporates this enhanced feature in Borderlands 3.

All things considered, we will simply have to wait for Borderlands 3 to release in order to get the best understanding of how large the game's map and environments will actually be. It will be quite a while from now, but hopefully it means Gearbox will be able to use the time to make the sequel's areas as sumptuous as possible.

Borderlands 3 is currently scheduled to release on September 13, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
