Mad Moxxi of the Borderlands series is a reoccurring character, always with a couple of quests up her sleeve for the Vault Hunters. When she isn’t asking players to complete errands or assassinate her exes, she’s apparently building a booming business empire.

Ever since her debut in the first Borderlands, Moxxi has steadily grown her businesses. It’s unclear why she’s branching out so much, but perhaps it could play a part in Borderlands 4. After all, her bars, arenas, and other such establishments have been staples in the past games.

Mad Moxxi’s Ever-Growing Business Empire in the Borderlands Franchise

It’s a given that Mad Moxxi has plenty of bars, with the most notable being Moxxi’s in Borderlands 2 and Moxxxi’s in Borderlands 3. However, she has plenty of other money-making machinery, with the very first being a coliseum in the original Borderlands: the Underdome. It’s a huge arena where players can battle it out against hordes of enemies. Moxxi regards it fondly, even calling it her “fourth husband.” However, it was soon replaced when Mordecai won all the challenges that Moxxi set out for him.

Sometime before the next game in the chronological timeline, Handsome Jack destroys the Underdome out of spite because Moxxi ended their relationship. However, in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, she’s seen running the Up Over Bar in Concordia. She opens even more drinking establishments in Borderlands 2, including the main bar in Sanctuary, the Badass Crater Bar in Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage DLC, and even a tavern in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep Borderlands DLC.

Moxxi finally extends her business empire in Borderlands 3, though admittedly through less-than-reputable means. Apart from her bar, she takes control of Handsome Jack’s casino-slash-space station in Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot DLC of Borderlands 3, with some help from the Vault Hunters. It’s a delayed act of revenge against the now dead Handsome Jack, but it would also spell plenty of riches for Mad Moxxi.

What makes this acquisition interesting is the fact that Handsome Jack’s casino also has a secret construction facility that spews out Loaders. Moxxi now has entire armies of robots at her disposal, not to mention all the profits that the gambling patrons have built up over the years. It could all carry over to Moxxi’s role in Borderlands 4.

Moxxi had the Underdome to make her plenty of cash in the first Borderlands game. However, it was destroyed long before Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel began. So, players have yet to see what Moxxi’s true economic power is like. With The Handsome Jackpot, however, things could change by the time the next game rolls around, unless something else inadvertently destroys the casino space station before the start of the game, which is possible since Borderlands 4 will likely feature a time skip. Assuming that Moxxi’s newly acquired casino remains intact, it could prove extremely useful to the next set of playable Vault Dwellers in Borderlands.

On the flip side, it makes it difficult for the next game to introduce a viable antagonist. One possibility would be that the franchise is setting up Moxxi to be the next antagonist, but this is pretty unlikely unless the new Vault Dwellers have a good reason to go up against her. It’d be more believable for the next installment to treat the casino as one of the game world’s safe areas, like Sanctuary or Concordia. After all, it’d be more interesting gameplay-wise to include new explorable areas in the next game. Still, the armies of Loaders are a wildcard just waiting to be played in Borderlands 4 and could spell a bigger role for Moxxi.

Borderlands 4 has not been announced.
