A few days ago, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed to investors that all of the company's future games will have "recurrent consumer spending opportunities," meaning big name titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, next year's WWE 2K game, and the upcoming Borderlands 3 will have microtransactions. However, in the case of Borderlands 3, it's unclear exactly how microtransactions will be implemented in the game, especially since past titles were about co-op and not competitive multiplayer where microtransactions are usually found.

The Borderlands series features a lot of loot, and so it stands to reason that Borderlands 3 could make some of the loot-collecting experience revolve around loot boxes. It's not confirmed at this time, and in fact Borderlands 3 isn't even officially announced at the time of this writing, but with loot boxes appearing in many of 2017's biggest releases, they're almost becoming a given in big budget games.

Since Borderlands 3 has yet to be given an official announcement, the best we can do is speculate about how microtransactions will be implemented in the game. Using loot boxes seems to make the most sense, but it's possible Gearbox Software will go a completely different route when adding microtransactions to the game.

Ultimately, fans will have to sit tight and wait for Borderlands 3 to be unveiled to the public before they will have a better idea of what to expect from the game's microtransactions. Luckily, it's probable that a Borderlands 3 reveal is right around the corner, since 90% Gearbox is working on the game and Gearbox has been teasing it for years at this point.

Perhaps a Borderlands 3 reveal will come as soon as next month. There are two big gaming events taking place in December, the PlayStation Experience and The Game Awards, and both events are known for featuring surprise game announcements. If Borderlands 3 is going to be announced before the year is out, either one of those events would be a prime opportunity for Gearbox to pull the curtain back on the long-anticipated game.

When Borderlands 3 is revealed, it will be interesting to see if Gearbox and 2K Games are upfront about its microtransactions from the start, or if they will be kept under wraps until closer to launch. Regardless of how Borderlands 3 uses microtransactions, though, we know by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's statement that they are definitely going to be in the game some capacity.

Borderlands 3 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
