There's no denying that some fans are more dedicated to the things they love than others are. Such is the case with Reddit user SirArkhon, who took the time to break down various data points from Borderlands 3 gameplay to figure out how the game's progression system will scale as Vault Hunters level up. While the allegations against Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford have stirred up controversy, it is nice to see a fan trying to figure out how the game works before it even releases.

In the first Borderlands, players gained health at a rate of 15 per level, which often resulted in players using the same guns throughout an entire playthrough. Borderlands 2 changed the formula, making player health rise at the exponential rate of 13% per level, resulting in massive health pools by the end of the game and weapons that felt more or less disposable. Now, however, SirArkhon believes that Gearbox has found a "Goldilocks zone" between the two games, which should make playthroughs feel better than they did in the other games, even more so with Borderlands 3 endgame content.

"From what I can tell, HP in Borderlands 3 is given by a formula of HP = 80 x 1.09^Level and dropping any decimal remainder." Sirarkhon wrote,  "Every data point I've found fits this curve. From this formula, we can extrapolate a theoretical max HP at level 72 of 39,609; this is over an order of magnitude smaller than BL2's baseline max of 530,564."

how long is borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 isn't that far off, but it is important to recognize that these numbers could still change as Gearbox works on finalizing the game's progression system and drop rates. While the footage gamers have seen in the Borderlands 3 gameplay trailer, looks promising, there's really no way of knowing how it'll shake out until the game actually launches.

Regardless of whether or not the progression system stays the same, kudos to SirArkhon. Taking the time to break down all this information probably took a pretty hefty chunk of time. If the system really does turn out to be the Goldilocks zone, then there's a good chance that Borderlands 3 will wind up being the best entry in the franchise to date, but only time will tell.

Borderlands 3 is set to release on September 13th, 2019, for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
