There are many important things that players will have to take into account to get the most out of Borderlands 3. Guns? Obviously. Skill trees? A must. Emotes? Now there’s something that might not seem to be pivotal to the looter-shooter experience, but for many players, the ability to have their Vault Hunters show some personality on demand is as important as finding the perfect legendary weapon, a way to spice up the fun with their friends.

The fact remains, emotes are in the game, and players are going to want to know how to use them. More than that, they'll want to know where they’ll be able to get as many as they can. Lucky for them, then, that emotes in BL3 are a relatively simple matter across the board.

How to Use Emotes

Players don't have to wait long to goof around with emotes. They don’t have to wait at all, in fact, because a number of them are available to use from the start. When playing Borderlands 3 on PC, using emotes is as simple as pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard, as each one will have an emote bound to it by default.

On consoles, however, there is a bit of a process to activating an emote. What players need to do is hold down on the Start or Options button (depending on the controller of choice) until a quick select menu pops up. Once it does, players need simply pick whichever emote they want and the emote will activate. After that, if they ever get bored with an emote, they can always replace it via the emotes option at the quick change station.

How to Unlock More Emotes

Emotes are cosmetic items in BL3, just like character heads and weapon skins, meaning there are plenty of them to find and unlock through the game's multiple worlds. But for those who'd rather not search for them, they can reliably find new emotes right in their spaceship/player hub the Sanctuary III, courtesy of the Black Market Dealer down in the ship's cargo hold.

It's worth noting that the Dealer only accepts Eridium as payment, so players hoping for new ways to express themselves are going to have to be mindful of that. That being said, it shouldn't be too much trouble for those who already know how to get Eridium.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Google Stadia version is also in development.
