Borderlands 3 is a game stuffed full of pop culture references and easter eggs, making nods to everything from Rick and Morty to Super Mario. Fans continue to find easter eggs and fun references in the game, including a shield that references the sci-fi comedy cartoon Futurama.

The Borderlands 3 Futurama easter egg comes in the form of the Mr. Caffeine Shield. This shield isn't anything all that special, but its flavor text is a clear reference to the Futurama episode where Fry gets addicted to coffee. There is a point in the episode when Fry says, "I don't want my coffee shaking!" which is the same flavor text that can be found on the Borderlands 3 Mr. Caffeine shield.

Besides being a Futurama reference, it's quite possible that the Mr. Caffeine shield doubles as a reference to Ubisoft's E3 2011 press conference. It was then when the world was subjected to the obnoxious host, one "Mr. Caffeine," who made dated references to Wayne's World and wound up on all kinds of cringe compilations. We even named it one of the most embarrassing E3 moments in the history of the show.

As previously mentioned, Borderlands 3 is full of references, and so it's quite possible that there are more Futurama easter eggs yet to be found. After all, both Borderlands 3 and Futurama are sci-fi games, and both focus on a crew that traverses the galaxy in a spaceship. Considering this, it wouldn't be all that surprising to learn that fans have come across more Futurama easter eggs in the game.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other Borderlands 3 easter eggs and references to fans to seek out. And like the Futurama easter egg, these typically come in the form of items and weapons that players can find around the game world. There's the Rick and Morty shotgun as previously mentioned, plus a bonafide Doom shotgun, an Elon Musk flamethrower, and much more. We compiled a list of the 10 best Borderlands 3 easter egg weapons for those who want to hunt them all down.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
