Update 4/3: Borderlands 3 is now confirmed to be an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC. It will be available for other PC platforms like Steam in April 2020 at the earliest.

Following the official Borderlands 3 reveal trailer, PC players were concerned that since Gearbox Software has worked closely with Epic Games in the past that Borderlands 3 would be an Epic Games Store exclusive at launch. Now it seems that theory could become reality if a recently leaked video is to be believed. It seems that an ad for Borderlands 3 went live a little early and revealed that Borderlands 3 would be heading to the Epic Games Store when it launches later this year.

The ad in question showcases each of the four new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 3 and highlights a few their abilities. It also reveals their names, which line up with the Borderlands 3 character class leak from before the official reveal. More interesting, though, is when the ad showcases the game's release date, the Epic Games Store logo is listed at the bottom next to the 2K and Gearbox logos. While some fans will likely be excited to have an official release date, PC players may be left frustrated and upset that the Epic Games Store will be getting Borderlands 3 over Steam - at least at first.

While there has been no confirmation from Gearbox Software regarding the matter, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford did comment on Twitter earlier that he finds store exclusives acceptable when they "come with advantages" and when they are short. Pitchford noted six months in his example, so if he is speaking from experience, then perhaps Borderlands 3 will only be a timed Epic Games Store PC exclusive and will launch on Steam at a later date. Fans will likely learn more about the Borderlands 3 release date and plans in the announcement scheduled to come at 6 a.m. PT.

Pitchford did also note that Gearbox Software is not the one to look at when it comes to publishing, price-points, and platform partnerships for Borderlands 3, all which fall solely on 2K and Take-Two. While some fans will likely be upset that Borderlands 3 may be an Epic Games Store exclusive, at least there is hope that the game will launch on Steam at a later date.

Borderlands 3 is currently in development for unspecified platforms.
