As fans of the series are likely to expect, Borderlands 3 is filled with Easter eggs to unearth and pop culture references to discover. Already, players have found a powerful One Punch Man shotgun in Borderlands 3, and that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to BL3 Easter eggs. Case in point: there is a single legendary flamethrower to obtain in Borderlands 3, and it functions as a somewhat humorous reference to technological entrepreneur Elon Musk.

To provide some context for the Borderlands 3 flamethrower, Musk's Boring Company began selling flamethrowers at the beginning of 2018. At the time, Musk tweeted that the weapon's "safe word is cryptocurrency," which prompted a response from Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford. This response indicated that Musk's flamethrower would be added to the "next Borderlands game," and that has come to fruition with the release of Borderlands 3.

How to Get the Borderlands 3 Flamethrower

In order to obtain the Borderlands 3 Elon Musk flamethrower, players should make their way to Athenas. Near the middle of this map, there is a location called Windward Plaza, where players can begin a crew challenge that will send them out to eliminate a creature boss called Chupacabratch. This boss has the potential to drop a number of Borderlands 3 legendary weapons, one of which is the BL3 Elon Musk flamethrower.

With respect to the performance of the Borderlands 3 legendary flamethrower, it is quite a powerful Tediore weapon indeed, and players can see it in action in the video featured here. This video also goes into detail on the ways that the BL3 legendary flamethrower references Elon Musk. This includes its name, the Firesale Long Musket++, which essentially contains "Elon Musk" within it, and its red text is a direct allusion to the aforementioned tweet.

All of that said, this is certainly not the first time that a video game has contained a reference to Elon Musk. For example, id Software and Avalanche Studios' 2019 shooter Rage 2 has an Elon Musk Easter egg, as the game features an NPC named Elton Tusk. While Musk may be a bit of a divisive figure, these types of references are a clear indication of the cultural cache the CEO carries.

Borderlands 3 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Google Stadia version also in development.
