As we declared last year, Borderlands 3 was one of the games we had hoped to see at E3 2018, but of course, the event came and went without a peep about a new entry in Gearbox Software's first-person shooter series. Now, though, it looks as if fans of the franchise could finally be getting official confirmation of the sequel's existence, with Gearbox having shared a tweet today that lists a March 28 date along with artwork similar to the visuals found within the IP's games.

The aforementioned date is displayed across a road sign for Boston, Massachusetts, with the image also having text that reads "Exit 3", which provides an additional hint that there will be announcement of some kind for Borderlands 3. The nod to the Northeastern US city is most assuredly a reference to the fact that Gearbox will be holding a panel at PAX East, with March 28 being one of the days for the annual gaming festival. So, there's a good chance that the developer could provide some sort of details regarding the sequel once the end of the month arrives.

There's no doubt that innumerable fans of the Borderlands series have been eagerly anticipating the day where Gearbox would finally announce a third numbered entry in the action-RPG franchise, with some longing for a possible release date in 2019. Of course, with the game having yet to even be publicly confirmed, there's no telling if and when it could actually hit store shelves.

That said, though, there has definitely been plenty of rumors relating to Borderlands 3 finally being unveiled to the public at some point this year. For instance, the series' publisher Take-Two Interactive stoked speculation of the game getting a reveal in 2019 after sharing a fiscal report stating that an unannounced AAA title is planned for release in the company's financial year of April 2019 through March 2020. Following the financial report's release, many guessed that Borderland 3 was the mystery project being referenced.

Taking everything here into consideration, we will simply have to wait and see what Gearbox Software has planned for March 28, and if it is in fact related to Borderlands 3. After all, there's always the possibility that the developer ends up pulling back the curtain on a Borderlands themed Battle Royale game instead.

Borderlands 3 has yet to be officially announced.
