Take-Two and its gaming label 2K Games are currently in the midst of their financial reporting conference call, which includes plans for the next year. 2K's fiscal year 2020, which runs from April 2019 through March 2020, is confirmed to feature currently announced games like The Outer Worlds from Obsidian and Ancestors: The Humankind Legacy from Patrice Désilets but it will also include an unannounced AAA release.

It has been known for some time that 2K had another non-Private Division game in development that had yet to be revealed, so today's update merely confirms that the project hasn't been delayed and remains on-track for a 2020 launch. All that's officially known about the mysterious release are its tentative release in the fiscal year 2020 and that Take-Two says that it has very high expectations for the project. Given the discourse surrounding the project, it seems highly likely that this unannounced game is Borderlands 3.

Gearbox's Borderlands sequel is said to be the studio's main focus for the past several years, but no official announcement has ever been made. Many expected Borderlands 3, or whatever the project might be titled, to be announced during The Game Awards 2018 after a tease from CEO Randy Pitchford, but the event came and went without a reveal.

Another possibility is that this project is 2K's in-house BioShock game, rumored to be in development. The last time news on that cropped up, however, it made it seem like the new BioShock game was still fairly early in development.

Unfortunately, excited Borderlands fans or those curious gamers may end up having to wait for a while yet. But if Borderlands 3 wasn't ready for announcement at The Game Awards 2018, it likely means a late 2019 or early 2020 launch at the earliest.
