'Borderlands 2' Limited and Collector's Editions Detailed

2K Games and Gearbox Software share details and images for the 'Borderlands 2' Limited and Collector's Editions, but can players really keep up with yet another massive box of stuff?

With only a few short months between us and Borderlands 2, excitement is quickly building for the sequel to the well-received IP. Today, 2K Games and Gearbox Software have announced a little bit more of what we can expect from the game's various special edition packages. Even though Borderlands 2 isn't due until September, it's certainly not too soon to drool over the extra goodies it has to offer. However, is the trend of big-boxed game releases becoming too much for the average gamer?

There is little doubt that having a lot of gaming paraphernalia is great, and in that department, Borderlands 2 does not disappoint. At a cool $100, The Deluxe Vault Hunter's Collector's Edition contains a wealth of goodness that any Borderlands fan would love to get their hands on: a Marcus Kincaid bobblehead; a detailed art and design book; a collectable sticker set; a map of Pandora; digital comic download code; and bonus downloadable in-game content.

For the ultimate fan, the Ultimate Loot Chest Limited Edition comes in at $150 and contains the aforementioned items, as well as: a steel book case; Creatures of Pandora wide-format ID chart; lithograph postcard set; field notes from Sir Hammerlock; cloth map of Pandora; a numbered certificate of authenticity; and a scale replica loot chest to hold it all in! Whew!

It certainly seems like players who take advantage of the limited edition sets will get a lot of bang for their buck. That said, there is a bit of an issue with offering so much content all at once. With so many sequels of great franchises headed our way in 2012, it's hardly possible to buy into all of their special edition releases. Because of that, many avid gamers will have to choose more carefully which series they dedicate more of their time and money towards.

Ranters: considering several game stores still carry limited editions of Halo 3, Call of Duty titles and the like, is simply owning the game enough for you? Or do you prefer developers releasing elaborate boxed set-ups for your favourite games?
