'The Boondock Saints' Co-op Shooter Reveal Coming Soon

Boondock Saints Video Game

Fans of theatrical vigilante justice rejoice! The cult classic film Boondock Saints is primed for an upcoming video game adaptation.

While licensed games based on film properties don't usually bode well for gamers, the characters and subject matter of the property in question does lend itself perfectly for the medium. Details are sketchy at the moment but the game is in development with a reveal soon.

The Boondock Saints survived a troubled production and limited release to become one of the most successful word-of-mouth home entertainment releases ever, so much so that the film earned a sequel a decade later along with comics and other merchandise to please the rabid fanbase who still attend conventions just to hang out with writer/director Troy Duffy and principal cast members Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus and David Della Rocco. It's also the film that provided comedian Billy Connolly along with character actor Willem Dafoe what may arguably be their most memorable performances.

That film follows a pair of Irish brothers (Flanery, Reedus) who take it upon themselves to rid the streets of Boston from 'evil' (murders, rapists, drug dealers, etc.) and do so in a very stylish Tarantino-style fashion with copious amounts of slow-mo shots to showcase the brothers' poorly planned, dual-wielding, bullet spraying assaults on the bad guys.

A game based on the Boondock Saints franchise is on the way and, as we're learning from Critical Mass Interactive president and CEO Matt Scibilia (via G4), will be a "full-on co-op shooter," as it should be. That's the only genre to do the film any justice.

"We don't want to do a crap-ass franchise game. We're staying true to the content. We're looking to expand the story, not just retell the franchise."

"The Boondock Saints characters are so strong -- the banter, the relationships between Rocco and the brothers, the Catholicism, that will all be featured in the game."

Fans of the film will get a new story with their favorite characters and more info will be revealed very soon with the young developer planning to showcase the game in April at PAX East will a full reveal at E3 this year. Critical Mass and the cast will also be at SXSW next month which means we can assume that creator Troy Duffy may be involved in the story and that the cast will certainly be providing their likeness and voices for the game.

The movie was a ton of fun and from a story, character and action perspective, it has all of the ingredients to make a good game if done right.

The Boondock Saints is coming for the PC and Xbox 360 and may be ported to the PS3 as well.
