The Book of Boba Fett Episode 4 continued rolling right along towards what appears to be an all-out war between the former bounty hunter-turned-crime boss and the Pyke Syndicate. The Disney Plus series also continued to employ a tactic that seemed to have run its course in Episode 3 of the Star Wars series, though it did so in a way that - for the most part - was a little more interesting than it has been in the past.

The Disney Plus show continued to have a kind of dual storyline as it showed how Boba rose from a man who was rotting in the stomach of a Sarlacc to a crime boss. Once again, most of the attention was paid to flashbacks as the former bounty hunter continued to heal in the Bacta Tank. Although, while it seemed as if the flashbacks might have been over last episode, there might have been a bit of a foreshadowing that they are officially done now, considering that when he stepped out of the tank, his healer droid told him that he was completely healed. On the other hand, it would take no effort at all to have him get injured enough in the next episode that he has to return for another session. Though it also feels as if the backstory telling has caught up with the "present" and that's a good thing overall.

Fennec Shand Backstory Fills In The Gaps

While it certainly seems like the show has gone to the flashback well a little too often, for the most part, it felt right to finish things off (assuming they are finished off) in Episode 4. There was of course the fact that the audience got to see just how Boba got his ship back. There was also the fact that they got to see just what happened to his Bantha - no it didn't die tragically - and finally, The Book of Boba Fett filled in the gaps when it came to why Fennec Shand is as loyal to her boss as she is in the "present."

The character - played by Ming-Na Wen - explained at least some of the reason as to why she was working with Boba in The Mandalorian but now the gaps have been filled in nicely. One does have to wonder if her being "modded" is going to come into play later on in The Book of Boba Fett, especially since they were so specific as to where and how she was modded. The former bounty hunter saving her life in the way that he did certainly does also help explain why she hangs with him despite very clearly not agreeing with his methods most of the time.

Boba Fett Still Seems Of Two Minds

One of the most frustrating parts of The Book of Boba Fett from the beginning has been that the guy who used to capture or kill people for credits had suddenly turned over a new leaf for seemingly no real reason. It's certainly possible that his near-death experiences just gave him a new outlook on life. However, if that's the case, at some point that needs to be explicitly said. His attempts at being a gentle ruler were further made confusing during one of the best scenes of the entire series when he takes out the biker gang with his starship.

The gunning down of every single person in that crew, without blinking an eye is the Boba Fett that Star Wars fans likely remember. He's someone who had no compunction about killing whoever he felt needed to be killed. Obviously, the fact that he was getting revenge for those same bikers killing his people was understood, but he didn't stop and express regret about what he was about to do before pulling the trigger. The "present" Boba seems far more hesitant to use violence and there doesn't really seem to be a reason why.

That pulling away from violence at all costs is especially off-putting considering that Tatooine is a place of great violence all the time. The planet is very obviously a hat tip to the American Old West. Lawlessness is the name of the game, Boba certainly knows this considering he's now a crime boss. Being a gentle crime boss continues to be stridently off-kilter as he also prepares for war and guns down a dozen people without breaking a sweat. Until the show can find a way to reconcile the two halves of Boba Fett it will hold the show back a bit and it doesn't appear there's a real interest in the showrunners in doing that. It's not a show killer at this point, there's plenty to like but it tends to make rocky plot points as the show goes on.

Plenty of Star Wars Fun

While there are still some things that felt off about The Book of Boba Fett Episode 4, it was also an episode where everything was ramping up in a really fun way. There was plenty of Star Wars action to go around, from Boba getting his ship back to using it to take out both the Sarlacc and the bikier gang. There was also the cantina scene in Mos Espa where Black Krrsantan went wild just for the heck of it. To be fair, Cantina fights are always plenty of fun in the Star Wars universe, and it was no different here, even if it was less of a fight and more of a brutal beating of a group of people by one very angry Wookiee. As is usually the case when talking about anything Star Wars, the show or movie is always better once the action really gets rolling and The Book of Boba Fett is no different. Most of the action seemed to be ramping up to something bigger and badder in the coming episodes but the way it built up that anticipation has been done quite well in the last few episodes as well.

The Book of Boba Fett streams new episodes on Disney Plus every Wednesday.
