The Bob's Burgers Movie is doing better than some may have expected since any cartoon going to the big screen will attract some skepticism. Was now the time for a movie? Does it enhance the plot of the cartoon or is it just a longer episode?

Truthfully, The Bob's Burgers Movie does feel like an episode of the cartoon in both good and bad ways. With an aggregate Metascore of 75, critics seem to love it. The plot goes some places that the trailers don’t indicate, so there are a few surprises for fans. It’s sort of a mystery movie, without giving too much away. For those that do wish to know more, there will be spoilers.

6 The Songs

A scene featuring characters in The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The songs in this series are usually short but catchy. Consequently, it might be a little surprising to learn that there are quite a few songs in The Bob’s Burgers Movie, even if it is not a full-on musical. After a brief couple of scenes, the opener, “Sunny Side Up Summer” sets up the goals of every member of the Belcher family. It’s the best song in the movie and gets reused for some reprisals and instrumental pieces too. “Every day I give myself a little diarrhea from the worry and the stressing” is a line Bob sings in the hilarious song.

“Lucky Ducks” is also a fun track along the lines of Grover Fischoeder’s villainous breakdown. Unfortunately, that’s not on the soundtrack. That said, the closer, “My Burgers Buns,” is a little disappointing since it’s not a full number, unlike the rest of the songs.

5 The Animation Upgrade

The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee from The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The animation got a decent upgrade from the TV version of the cartoon. All the characters have more frames of animation, and the colors are more vibrant on the big screen. There is a 3D effect to everything as well.

The biggest upgrade to the animation is the choreography. Most songs in the cartoon are either done through montages or credits; however, The Bob’s Burgers Movie's tracks are all choreographed like a musical. It is a sight to behold for those who have been wishing for a more robust number in the cartoon since Gene put on the Die Hard and Working Girl musical.

4 The Mystery Aspect

Sergeant Bosco from The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The trailers for The Bob’s Burgers Movie don’t give too much away. The promotions revolve around the idea of it being cool that Bob’s Burgers is getting a movie in general.

Shockingly, the actual plot of this movie involves a murder mystery. A sinkhole opens up in front of the restaurant, Louise stumbles into the hole, finds a body, and then gets her siblings to help her solve the case. It’s not the most grandiose plot for a feature film, but it is a step-up for this cartoon.

3 Very Punny

Linda from The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The Bob’s Burgers Movie is a funny movie packed with a lot of great lines. However, it is also clever with its wordplay. The puns are on a different level than Gene making some kind of fart joke. For example, some of the best puns in the cartoon derive from sign gags like Bob’s burger of the day choices.

For example, “Between a Broc and a Chard Place” is a great name that comes up in this movie. At one point Felix is driving while getting Champagne pumped into his mouth, so he says “Shall we Champump our way out of here?” to show that he wants to get away from the Belchers. Even Teddy gets some good wordplay in the movie.

2 The Callbacks

Louise’s Animals from The Bob’s Burgers Movie

If someone goes into the movie never having seen an episode of the cartoon before, they will be fine. However, there are a lot of callbacks in The Bob’s Burgers Movie that will surely get fans talking in the theater. There are Tina’s fantasies relating to Jimmy Pesto Jr., horses, and zombies, things that were set up in episode two of the cartoon.

The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee is a band that Gene sets up early on the show, and it comes back in the film because he wants them to play at the wharf’s big celebration. Louise’s animals come to life briefly in her dream as they do when she gets the flu in the show. More importantly, the biggest callbacks enhance the main plot and themes. Again, knowing them will give fans some extra context and satisfaction overall.

1 One Mystery Finally Solved

Louise from The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Louise’s hat was one of the biggest mysteries in the show until it was revealed a few seasons in. The reason why she never wants to get rid of it is that she got it as a kid to make her feel better. Linda made it. That was the story fans had gotten for years. However, the movie reveals more about that background. Bob gave Linda the idea because his mom used to wear a pink hat when he was a kid. She would wear it even on hot days and it always gave him comfort.

This is why Bob thought the hat would be good for Louise to sort of calm her nerves. The movie’s plot could be called a murder mystery, but it is also a coming-of-age tale for Louise who has to learn to be okay without the hat. The Bob’s Burgers Movie has jokes, mysteries, and plenty of heart as well.
